Straight cut fringe?

I think this is really 2 questions but …

  1. Just watched a vid tut for hair and somehow shows Child hairs in Particle Edit mode ?

  2. I have to switch between Particle Edit and Object modes just to see the alignment of the child hairs but even so, so far with default settings (simple children) I’m not able to make a straight line, making bangs / fringe.

Any ideas on how to make a straight cut look, so all hairs are same length ?
