I probably pressed something but this has been happening ever since i have installed the new version of blender.

You probably set the viewport orbiting point to something far away.
Whatever be the reason, Pressing either Numpad . (period/decimal) or Shift+C solves the problem.
Pressing the period sets the selected geometry/object as orbit center, while Shift+C sets it to the cursor.
