Can't zoom in ver 2.7

I can’t zoom in on mesh I need to fix. When I get too close I end up inside the mesh I want to work on. Can some one tell me how to zoom in on something so I can get closer without going inside the mesh? I didn’t have this problem in earlier Blender versions.

Switch to orthographic viewmode (numpad_5) or adjust view clipping values on the properties panel (N).

Thanks. I didn’t know the perspective view would do that.
