I’m working for the French National Center for Scientific Research. Some researchers had developped
a tool to offers to artists some freedom on light propagation. By capturing specific light rays with an input portal and
releasing them somewhere else with an output portal, you can give new lighting effects.The positioning of portals is completely free. You can choose the kind of features you want to edit with presets
(add form filters or color or light correction factors…). It does little to rendering time. Indeed the goal is to help win production time on the illumination of complex scenes often costly manually to rework.
You can test now the add-on on Blender to create and manipulate the portals. A demonstrator for windows and linux use with Blender is available to test the technology and observe the gains. Scenes of examples are also included.

Direct Camera rays
To demonstrate how ray portals works, we built this example where we want to see through the input portal. To do so, we put an input portal in front of the camera and we capture only rays that come directly from the camera : regex “C”

Mirror reflection
In this example, we demonstratehow to edit a mirror reflect to see a given object from the camera point ofview. Without edition the red object appear in the mirror reflect. Here we maywants to edit this scene to make the red object appear in the reflect. To do sowe first place input in front of the mirror and capture all the rays that comefrom the camera and have one interaction with the scene. As the input portal isvery close to the mirror, we only capture rays that hit the mirror. Then we place the output reflected rays are dirceted to the yellow object. Regex is setto “C.”.

Notice that the frosted aspect of the mirror is kept with the ray portal edition.
