Cartoon Dragon Character

Greetings,

I’m almost finished modeling my dragon, so I thought I would post for some feedback and critiques.

I still need to give him webbing for his wings, teeth and tongue, and a real eye as the one here is a stand-in for the modeling.

The poly count so far is 2726, and after I add the final items it should be right around the 3k mark.

The first thing that I notice is the bug-eyed look when viewed from the front due to the size of the eyes themselves, he almost looks anorexic in this case.

Also, something about the nose seems when viewed from the front seems off as far as Dragons are concerned, perhaps a bit too human-like?

Heya Ace,

Thanks for the feedback.

The eyes are big, but I wanted those big pixar type eyes, since he is a toon character. I think what might be giving it the “anorexic” look is the well pronounced cheekbones. Maybe these could be softened a bit to help fill out his face some.

The nose, or snout definitely doesn’t look dragon like I admit, I was going for something a little more saurian. I did see the “human nose” shape from the front view after you mentioned it though. Will see what I can do about that.

Thanks for the feedback, I will tweak him a bit before I move on to the sculpting phase.

Cheers!!!

Good topology.

Thanks Astapov

I finished the model, it was closer to 5000 poly when I made proper eyes, tongue and teeth, as well as the webbing between the wings. I was originally thinking game character, which he could still easily be, I would just have to make some adjustments to some of the mesh to lower the count.

This is my first time trying to sculpt a character, and its a lot of fun. This is the 3rd level of subdivision right now, but I will add a 4th and add in even more detail, like a reptile skin brush and cracks and creases etc…

I’ve gone up to 5 levels of subdivision, almost 6 and a half million poly now. It should bake a nice normal map though and the base model is still very light.

I’ve added the second layer of detail, with the scales but still want to paint in skin creases around the eyes and joints in the elbows and fingers etc…

I also found some sculpting brush packages, but was unable to find a nice reptile type skin brush, so I made one myself. If anyone else wants to use it for their sculpts, feel free…

That brush is nice! But wouldn’t it be easier to just texture it and add bump mapping?

Great work… where do you find that brush… ? could you post the link here… ?

Bossestrenders: Thanks. Your right, I could have used the small scale brush and made a bump instead. But I was having fun and going crazy since its my first sculpt. With this too I can bake out an ambient occlusion map and shadow all those little creveses. I think I may add another layer of detail in a bump map on top of this, will see how it looks.

Bintang Senja: Thank you, I’m glad you like it so far. The black and white image of the scales I posted is the brush, you can just right click and save it and bring it into Blender for sculpting or texture painting or whatever.

I’ve moved on to the texturing, so far its 100% Blender, not sure if I will need to move into Gimp for some of it. But I would like to do it all in Blender. We’ll see how it turns out.

Cheers guys, will post an update when I get more done.
