Alright, I am making a game and I cannot decide what to call it.
It is based on Falling Eggs (see my sig), but it includes much more than eggs…
I am hoping to release it commercially, so the name is very important.
So - what should I call it?

Its based off Falling Eggs, but what other objects will there be. What will you use to catch the objects. You named your last game Falling Eggs because eggs were falling from the sky. So what is falling in your new game? We need to know these things.
{LL}
I voted “drop zone”- it seems catchier to me than “catch 'em” (um… no pun intended?)
how about “the sky is falling!”?
heh- I am teh suxor at naming things
Lucky Lizard:
What will you catch???
Everything from eggs to tools to money (even garbage).
Captain Oblivion:
I will give “The Sky is Falling” some thought, but it’s not too original…
Your game is causal and fun.
Drop Zone looks kind of serious like some parachute or weapon drop zone.
May be something “Raining Crazy” (Crazy dosen’t seem to fit - may be another word) - something “Raining” as it falls from the sky
Hmm…
I will post a screenshot of the new interface.
I am hoping to make it a little less casual though.
Remember it is based off Falling Eggs, it is not Falling Eggs.
Falling Eggs was easter themed, but this will be a cool almost sci-fi theme.
Thanks to all for giving me some new ideas to think about. I will have to sleep on it.
Ya . posting the screen shot will give a nice idea
How about just “Drop”? One-word titles can be pretty catchy and even evocative sometimes.
Vote + bump…
haha! this is the first time in my life I voted with the majority .
Drop Zone
also…for other names… perhaps
Pandora’s bucket
magic basket
bounty bucket
anyways, Catch sounds cool to me too,
but before you take my advice please remember I name games like :
Br!x
Zody the slug
Max-xion (sounds like a rival company for tampax to me now , I really regret this one)
Here’s my opinioin:
The name of your game is one of the most important selling points. A great name combined with interesting cover design will draw the customer in and cause them to take the time to read the description and look at screenshots.
To me, “Catch 'Em” sounds like a great name for a free game, but not for a commercial one. You need to think “What does the customer interpret the name to mean.” “Catch 'Em” is almost certainly a game about catching objects of some sort in some fashion, and if a customer is not generally interested in that type of thing they will pass right by.
“Drop Zone” lacks a certain amount of interest (at least to me), though it is the better of the two options.
If I were naming it, I would go with something a bit more non-descriptive and intriguing. Something that would make someone want to investigate. Since you’re going with a sci-fi feel, maybe something like “Interceptor” would work. Add in a strange adjective or a greek letter to make it more interesting. Maybe “Alpha Interceptor” or something. You could also give it some sort of weird vocabulary to separate it from the norm. Maybe you could call the basket a “Filter” and name your game “Filter Effect” or “Filtration”. (I haven’t researched to see if any of these names have been used already, they’re just suggestions off the top of my head.) BTW, titles cannot be copyrighted in the US, so depending on your location it might not matter whether someone else already used a title. If you like it, but it’s already been used, you might still be able to use it. (Check on trademarks, too, because those can apply to titles and logo design.)
“Catch” is already the name for the meatspace game played with a baseball, a father, and a son. ![]()
Tremendous thanks blendenzo.
I am trying to make it sound like a WildTangent type game, so I will go to the WildTangent website and observe…
The big question is: What does the name make you think the game will be like?
I need only ask this question with every title I think up, and the answer is the key.
Excuse me while I go do some research…
I want a sortof sci-fi theme, but not really, kinda quirky.
How do you describe a basket/bucket/garbagecan/bowl game in one or two words?
I will describe the game in as much detail as possible.
You play from different “Zones”. Zone one will be “Falling Eggs” where you use a basket to catch eggs. Zone two will be “Nuts & Bolts” where you use a bucket to catch nuts and bolts. And they go on differing greatly. Each zone has five levels, and there is a high score table for each. Anyway, I have reached a sort of “writer’s block” here.
After some research I found a WildTangent game called Drop’Em.
Then I brainstormed.
Catch! - NOPE
Drop Zone -NOPE
Catch’Em -MAYBE
Intercept -NOPE
Interceptor Mania -MAYBE
Drop Mania -NOPE
Crazy Catch -NOPE
Catch Mania -NOPE
Oh well, maybe I just need to give it time.
I especially liked early home video games… they had some of the coolest names, and wonderful cover art… problem is, that they did not usually reflect the game very well.
I would use caution to not over sensationalize things… keep it simple, yet snappy
there was a atari 2600 game like this called “Kaboom!”, it featured a little bandit dropping bombs, and you had to catch them or KABOOM!!!
one of the best named games ever in my opinion.
other great named games…
Joust
Asteroids!
Space invaders
Burger time
food fight
chop lifter
Defender
lemmings
Star castle
punch out
space taxi
Soldat
lame names:
Counter strike.
Donkey Kong (I love the intro, “How high can you get?”, LOL!)
PAC-MAN (guess it is better than the games real/original name Puckman)
Quix
VS. Super Mario Brothers
scramble
Pepper ][
LODE RUNNER!
jumpman JR
quake (I own them all, and have yet to see any seismic activity)
poo-yan
Well… you are hoping to releace it commerially right?
A few tips…
make the game exciting. Give them a reason to buy it.
You have to ask yourself… “why are people going to pay for my game when there are other games just like this such as falling eggs for free?” You have to add somthing different, something exciting that is different from many other things. Add really cool features that would make people buy it.
Just a few tips… and good luck:D
Lostinspace
I think that “Drop Zone” sounds like a shooter or parachuting game…
But I voted on It because “Catch 'Em” doesn’t sound cool at all.
Good Luck
Already got the cool features taken care of, It’s the name I’m having trouble with.
I’m thinking “Catch!” again (with exclamation point).
I’m mainly stuck between making it sound cool, while simultaniously properly describing it.
What kind of game does “Catch!” make you think of?
“Catch!” sounds great to me
easy to remember, and rolls off the tongue quick.
I agree… keep the “!” in there
have a good day
