Catching dragons inside a volcano

Little viking trying to catch a dragon (inside a volcano…)

I created the little yellow viking before:

Afterwards I decided to make the full render > add dragon + scene.

Same ref used: https://johnloren.com/odds--and-ends

The dragon was a very fun character to sculpt. Colors added with sculpt vertex paint. I did a retopology and transferred the vertex paint to a texture but used the raw sculpt instead of the retopo for the render. Colors looked better more saturated on the vertex paint version.

Clay version of the scene without fog.

Scene setup:

360 movie from the dragon, showing sculpt + wireframe

Early less saturated render.

I have a soft spot for dragons with bumblebee-esque proportions

Great sculpt and great render :raising_hands:

Also I will save those pillar designs in the back of my head for future reference

Wait a minute, is he trying to “catch” the dragon here… or get it to cook itself alive over the molten lava!?

Either way, nice work! :ok_hand:

Bit of column A, bit of column B would be my guess.

Hah, no doubt!

This cute fun scene goes morbid quick…

Yes, step one was getting the attention of the dragon. That worked nicely! Now he only has to do step 2: the actual catching of the dragon without falling inside the hot volcano. What can go wrong..? Thanks for the nice comments!

Same here, I also like this kind of design. Seeing it come to “life” inside Blender is great. The pillars are relatively easy to do but it works. It’s the default cube with some extrudes and scaling > many copies (move rotate scale). Join everything together and remesh in sculpt mode. Horizontal sculpt lines with clay brush + some damage on the edges. Paint with cavity mask activated gave it a nice texture.

Thanks, I struggled a bit with the lighting. In the end I switched to light linking. Both the dragon and the viking have their own 3-point light setup that only affects the specific character.

I also used render raw addon > color correction inside blender How to Use Render Raw in Blender for Professional Color Grading This tool is very good to quickly adjust the feel of the render. I highly recommend checking this out.

I also had to search for YT videos about it before I could use it correctly. Light linking is great tool once you know it exists and how to use it.

Nicely brought to life and good call on the Gleb Alexandrov reference for lighting and rendering information, his videos and courses have been among my favorite and most useful/practical for learning lighting and rendering in Blender :star:

Yes he knows what he does with color correction and lighting. I mostly move some sliders from left to right and back again. I will need to see his mini course again a few times. Really great that you can find so much high quality training material.
