cd-rw drive is killing my cd's :<

today for some strange reason my cd-rw drive didnt watnt to open up, after several tries it finally did (thank god), but now sometimes when i open it up the cd’s are half on and half off the tray, one got scratched pretty good, and that made me mad. so what is causing this? it never has happened before until today :-? , i cant see anything visibly wrong with it.

If I were you I’d take it out and look at it to see if anythings jammed in the gears.

or if you have a second disc in there

optical drives are cheap though, get a new one

It could be the discs themselves - I once tried to spin a badly-made audio CD at 50x when it started rocking back and forth in the drive and making screeching noises. If the discs aren’t smooth enough, they can do funny stuff at high speeds.

i checked and there doesnt seem to be anything in any of the gears, or a cd in there. you might be right ray_the ray, it doesnt seem to be happening to this other disc i put in… otherwise this is a great excuse to get me a dvd drive

They use small discs with a hole in the middle, they are made of tissue.
Sometimes they dont glue properly and fall off, messing up your drive.
If you are not in warranty time anymore open it (carefully) and check for loose tissue dampers. I had experienced that myself. Good luck!

thanks 3D-penguin , will do  . i seemed to be working fine the last few times i have used it, better open it up though just to be safe.
