CD tower design - second set (downloadable .blend!)

These are some designs for CD towers, which I had for an ID design assignment. I posted the “winning” design in a seperate thread, these were the other possible versions.

Zsolt

You’ve convinced me…I want to do ID.

Great piece of work.

nice design! I like the spirals.

nice stuff…

i think that this can be a good example of how blender actually can be used (somewhat) as a CAD program/ Industrial Design

i like the blue tower…

Great work on the twisty one, that would probably make millions if you actually made it :o

I hope I can make myself understood here. YOU ARE GOING TO GET THAT FIRST TOWER IN PRODUCTION AND THEN YOU WILL SEND ME ONE FOR FREE. Understood? I WANT THAT FIRST TOWER!

whats ID design?

It’s a study, and comes in two ‘forms’

The first one is ID (Industrial Design) and centeres more around the look and feel of objects

The second one is IDE (Industrial Design Engenieering) and covers the area of ID + a lot of technical courses.

Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s how I got it explained at my University (I myself study IDE at Delft University of Technology)

These are very original designs and I have to say I’m completely enchanted by their apparent complexity. But the beauty of it is that they’re so simple! I was sceptical about the spiral but you demonstrated with blender that its doable. Amazing work. I like these much better than the spline curve tower you “won” with.

zsolts, just curious which software you used to make these designs?

was it a CAD package with solid modelling or was it blender? perhaps exported from CAD rendered in blender.

the wood materials and lighting are very impresive, i am kinda keen to get my hands on your materials and settings.

i really do like some of the designs, the sprial designs were rather cool although impractical, and kinda large. however i did like the effect the CD’s give on the way down.

Very cool designs! I like the spiral the most. But I don’t think the last one will really work 8) And indeed, good wood textures. You’ve made my choise between ID and biologie more difficult…

No CAD was used, modelled in good old Blender. Yafray was used for rendering, for two things: GI, and because it doesn’t blur the textures like Blender does.

Here’s a blend file, feel free to look at the materials, lighting, rendering setup I used:

Timothy_L: thanks for that short explanation! I myself wasn’t sure of the correct English translation of the course I’m taking, but now that I read your post, I’m doing IDE, since besides ID, we also learn engineering disciplines. (And it’s also at a tachnical university)

Zsolt, I like your designs - simple/clean and so beautiful.

I think the images with grey background look better, the blue ‘glow’ on the other images looks a bit strange to me.

heck yeah.

u get paid to do that kind of stuff…?
but then u get stuck with a job designing cardboard boxes and packaging.
