I work at a VFX studio and am trying to use Blender 2.8. Unfortunately it appears that CentOS7 is not a supported OS. This seems to be a bad choice if the intent to is to have commercial studios use Blender. We are on CentOS because it is one of the very few Linux distros that are certified for our other applications (Autodesk, Foundry, Isotropix, etc.). From what I know, many many studios that use Linux are using CentOS.
I would normally try to use LD_LIBRARY_PATH to fix this, but some research on the web seems to indicate that that trick will not actually work in this case. Is that right? Are there any other tricks a non-root user can try to get this software to work?
Going forward, Is there any thought on making Blender work on CentOS? As an end user I do not have the permissions to do a full compile myself, even if I knew how. We would really need to have a pre-compiled binary that came from an official source. The RnD department is wholly uninterested in spending their time on this.
Personally I have been on a mission to try to educate my co-workers about the benefits of switching to Blender for large parts of our pipeline, but this issue drives a wooden stake right through the heart of that effort. It also bums me out since it means I will have to keep on either using 2.79 (which is ok) or stick with Maya. But frankly 2.8 is so much nicer that I am not enjoying the idea of either of these options. And none of my coworkers are ever going to invest any time in 2.79.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
