thanks for any help
with the chain addon is there a way to change the inner and outer radius of the chain link?

Just select the main chain link, go into edit mode and change the mesh. It’s just a matter of modeling.
in other words there are no new panel for the object added
this link looks like a torus but no parameters available to set size !
so you say to simply change the object in edit mode the old fashion way !
hiw about if i simply change the mesh name for another mesh name like a well made torus with appropriate size
inner and outer raidus
at least it would look better then the thin link we see there!LOL
which looks more like bibycle tire then a real chain link!
thanks
Explore dupliframe. It’s a very cool and non destructive way to create a non deforming chain (Follow the exemple given in the blender wiki)
remember this old way of doing things !LOL
but i made a torus with right proportions and simply change the mesh name in the added chain link from addon
and it works like a charm !
thanks guys
Actually, it’s not so old, it’s a pretty useful method if you need your chain not to seems flubby looking in some cases…Pretty curious to see what you are able to do because you seems to be an advanced 3Dmodeler. Give me one link please.
more then one way to use tools in blender
and if you want to follow curve dupliframe can do a nice job no questions about it
but it takes time to do it and you have to read the doc on dupliforme which i don’t use very often!
so i found faster to do it with 2.63 chain addon
cause i did not need any curving chain path
it’s just that the addon does not have a panel to set the size of the torus !
but found a way to simply change the mesh data !
and i’m beginning to be advance with modelisation but stil learning all the new tools and gadgets in 2.63
but i began with 2.48 if i remember well and it did not have all the new tools we do now in 2.63!
and i did a lot of things in 2.49 before 2.5 but this does not show you how to use 2.63
a lot of things have change location then the new panels and all the new tools!
i doubt that you can remember and know eveything in blender
there are so many things in blender to learn and practice
and new ones are being added continously
but it is impressive to see how far 2.6 has come from 2.49 !
which doc are you talking about ?
do you mean threads i work on
well sorry but there was a major bug on forum and i loss all my threads last year!
but i did some threads this year using cycles
see WIP section i work right now on titanic 3D model
but that’s gone take me all summer i guess cause i want some special cross sections and the mechanical rooms all that in cycles to get a more realist render!
but cycles is still a WIP in alpha stage so we can expect some changes over time!
Ok. I’m happy with your reaction. In fact I haven’t taken enough time to understand your problem so I quickly gave you an alternative.Next time hope you considere any suggestion as a chance to see things differently and not as a joke…The documentation I was talking about was existing when I began with 2.48 like you. I don’t use the add chain add-on, but I really want to know where you “change the mesh name in the added chain link from addon” (image please).best regards
Personnally I was thinkink Sago solved your problem.
mesh data
in blender you have an object with a name which has a mesh data with a name also
the mesh data represent all the verts with edges and faces of your object
so if you do another object with another shape which means it has another mesh data
select any other object and
so you can go to the object panel and you’ll see a mesh name but this can be changed and you can select another mesh name which has another shape
sorry did not know i made a joke here!
in blender usually there are always more then one way to do things
and over time you learn them and learn which one is fastest and easiest to use depending what your doing
but this takes a lot of practice and modelling to devellop your skills !
hope you understand the mesh data!
Ok, I was expecting something more complexe. Good solution. This way you avoid the ctrl+J (mesh data join with the mesh you want to use as chain).
well it’s easy to add a torus set the inner and outer radius to something you like then simply apply the mesh data to the Addon object!
and in 2.63 the addon on is very easy to enable and add any number of chain link !
i prefer this method then using the dupliframe in this case!
cause it’s way faster!
have fun
salutations
I’ve made a quick video to show you dupliframe. it will be converting soon because i’m not a vimeo premium member. Stay tune to this thread!
