I guess you had to set the ring (before multiple cloning) as triangle mesh collision bounds?

Actually, this is quiet easy. I used a cloth simulation and a particle system. There is a little bit of tweaking to make it work but nothing that difficult.
I may make a tutorial someday if I found the time.
