In the NEW year, a NEW family moves in a NEW apartment. They set up their NEW table on the NEW floor and put on a NEW tablecloth. To celebrate, they buy a NEW block of cheese and use their NEW knife and cheese grater! Then they notice that the cheese will melt from the sun and ruin the tablecloth. Tommorow is a NEW day.

Probably the worst ‘New’ gift to get…

Here is my non-participating entry, “Pattern Unrecognition,” or “Stranger in a Robot’s Eyes,” which explores unanticipated newness encountered by a robot attached to a system said to know everything already.

At this moment we see, through the robot’s eyes, a Stranger striding into view. In that same instant fifteen trillion faces in the database are searched, all without matches. The robot’s sensor arrays sample her 1,024 times each second. Her eyes peer into the robot’s large primary photoreceptors, which in turn magnify her gaze, amplify and assess her every aspect. Somewhere deep within the Recursive Analysis Module returns an exception, an inexplicable emergence of familiarity in the local neural network contradicting the distant metasystem’s finding of “pattern unrecognized,” a finding notable for its extreme rarity. For several moments the robot stands motionless as she passes it. Conflicting signals within the network struggle for resolution. A failsafe series of local rules trap the conflicting signal and handle it. Robot memories are precise. There are no Strangers. Robots do not make mistakes. The database is error free and always will be. Robots do not believe in deja vu. Exactly 11.38 seconds have lapsed when another face enters the view. Once again the sensor array streams receptions to the Processing Center for authentication. “Pattern recognized,” confirms the metasystem. All, again, is as it was calculated to be…

Pure Blender 2.43RC1, no post-processing on the render.

The face was derived partly from my “Eve” project, so the entry, while non-participating, can be regarded as “open” as well.

Lots of possibilities for this topic, so I hope we get to see some more entries.

Here we go again. Titled “New Robot”, took forever to render and there quite a lot of things that I’m not satisfied with. On the upside, I really like the painter thingies :). Pure entry.
