Challenge #66 Voting CLOSED

This week’s theme: Way of the Samurai

Pure Entries

Modron [list:91a319648f]
Here’s my samurai guy. I wish I’d had more time to tweak things, but I am happy with the result for the most part.

Okay someone already did it, so I had to modify mine slightly. Wish I had had more time this weekend to work on it. The

script is written in Kanji, and translates “Samurai warrior training tonight”

Well folks - here is my contest entry. I’ve been working on it for pretty much two days straight. Many many hours of work

have gone into it and I can finally say that I’m done. There are more details I wanted to add, but due to time constraints,

ulcers, psychiatric help, a criminal trial, balding, and a whole slew of other issues, I could not. Thanks to all of the

other competitors for participating and making such great entries! And good luck to all of you!

A picture on the internet gave me the idea, the grass was generated with some grass & hair generator in blender.
It took me around one hour:

Here’s my pure entry for the Weekend Challenge called “Bushido,” which means “way of the warrior”:

As Tol requested, its a Sakabouto, used by the Ronin Samurai durign the beginnings of the Meji restoration. the Sakabouto was

a reversed edge blade thus to symbolise the warrior’s wantign to not shed blood anymore.

well thats it for my history leasson.

Tamarin
Everything is blender (minus the text), could be more detailed, and textured? some day…

It’s not 3D, so I guess it’s an open or non-competing entry. Doesn’t worry me, I did it as a nice relaxing way to avoid the

work I was supposed to be doing

Non-Participating Entries

Fweeb [list:91a319648f]
This post by Desoto got me thinking about bad jokes for Weekend Challenge entries. Well… I got inspired, in a dumb way.

Here’s my entry (probably best to consider it non-competing):

blengine
im not entering… i started a bit late and i didnt finish… i really didnt want to rush this so im going to finish it

within the week

it still needs alot of work, more equipment, and a dojo scene, and possibly a japenese-like dragon behind her(like a pet)

[/list:u:91a319648f]

Though tempted to vote for myself again, DeSoto got my vote.

RiskBreaker got my vote just for the well done Toon effect.

and voting for myself kinda defeats the purpose of entering.

Macblender

I think it’s ok to vote for yourself, though, it is hard to be objective on something that you have been staring at for hours, and worked hard to make. So,…maybe not. %|

rogerm3d, I was going to vote for you but I remember reading the rules and it says to vote for pure entries before open entries…so I’m thinking since the competition IS so stiff I may reconsider. I’m going to save my vote for toward the end I think…

<<edit>>

After much internal debate and consultation with both my lawer, my astrologer, my personal psychic, my tarot card reader, my chiropracter, my dietician, my proctologist, my psychologist, my mail man, my rabbi, my priest, the dali lama, the pope, the prince of whales, the king of Rhodesia, the viscount of derbyshire, and many others, I cast my vote for Robertt. Good work!

<<edit #2>>

Please vote for someone other than yourself. Its the honorable thing to do by the code of Bushido…or something…

Seriously though…it’ll only make the contest more interesting. The more I think about it, the more I realize its ridiculous to vote for yourself.

Well, I liked it when he posted the wip and I still like it best so Desoto gets my vote.

I voted for BackiZ. I’d like to see everyone vote for someone other than themselves out of fairness to everyone else including yourself.

Rogerm3d, Modron, and Desoto-111: great stuff! I followed your WIP threads and appreciate you sharing the evolution of your creations.

RobertT

   Thanks, Desoto-111! I bribed them all of course, except the psychic who already knew what I was up to. When all else fails you just have to take a proctologist at his word :stuck_out_tongue: Just don’t show them the red render cause that might scare em

RobertT

BackiZ, i REALLY really love your overall scene! but your samurai isnt modeled(at least i dont think so) =) and the grass is wild like spikes… but the fx and composition are sweet

i had to vote for modron though… that model is just awesome. perfect head… really clean model, but better lighting and textures could have really made it alot more awesome

Thanks man.

Modron I wanted to take the chance to compliment you on your project too. Your face/head came out very well, and the pose is quite natural. You did a great job translating the image to 3d and I just wanted to congradulate you on a job well done. Good luck!

Everyone be sure to check out blengine’s nonparticipating entry – IT’S AWESOME :o
I look forward to seeing the final version. This easily would have won the contest, I think. Every aspect about it is incredible – characterization, hair, eyes, textures, plants, motion, grace, concept, lighting, angle, details, balance…
Massive reminder how far I have to go before my stuff is a fraction as good.

RobertT

Not to sure of who to vote for yet, think I’ll save it for the end (large bribes welcome   )
Don’t read ahead if you are not wanting harsh crits and opinions by me that may be slightly out of proportion and biased.
:o
:<
Modron:Nice, but something seems too stiff too me, I think its the length and lack of bend to the arms (should be longer and slightly bent)
KCOGRN: good idea, dosn’t read if you don’t know japanese, could have used a little bit miore of an environment.
Desoto-111: very nice work, maybe some shadows, more environment (like displays on the side of other stuff?)
einar-st: an army of monkeys would like that  nice could use material work
BackiZ:very well composed/lit, is a little too obvious that you just made a cutout, could use some rim lighting
Robertt: amazing work with toon shading, something bugs me about the shoulders, but everything else is very good
Riskbreaker:if only you had mustered some feet on him  aside from that another amazing work with toonshading
MacBlender:I like it simply because you had the guts to do just a sword :P, could have used an environment though, floating in blue is kinda odd
crow:like how it seems like a fight is in progress, but that face bugs me, such intence crosseyed stare
Tamarin:cool box dude, looks almost raytrace, nice style, interesting render
rogerm3d: the best render ;) needs work on more textures (book cover, bamboo, sword)
broken:nice, strong piece, 2d work isn’t my point of focus, is well executed (excuse the pun)
blengine:its a good thing you didn’t enter, else you would have won, seems odd to me that the one sword was swung while the other is just being held, maybe if she swung both swords (a double strike)

all good entries, in conclusion it looks like it was attacking samurai, not swords that where common like was predicted :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you, DeSoto, and my compliments on yours as well.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, rogerm3d! Yes, I agree you did have the best render quality (yafray). As a thumbnail your image looks like a photograph of real things. I know what you mean about the shoulders. It’s his clothes bunching up. After I modelled the character I made an outfit, and both the clothing and his body are parented to an armature, which produced some interesting folds in the fabric, which acts like (thanks to my lack of knowledge of cloth effects in Blender) a stronger cloth that I’ve in fact seen used in garb from that region of the world. Originally he was shirtless, but here he’s supposed to be suiting up for battle.

I still have blengine’s image up in another window. Damn that’s so good

RobertT

Robertt, lol, damn, thanks for that awesome compliment! =)

rogerm3d, thanks too
it was a double strike too, thats why theres two slices in the bamboo… except she brought her left hand over her shoulder after the strike… like from “lower right, to upper left strike”

but your right, it isnt very noticeable at all… i think ill extend the upper cutting trail to reach that sword, might help alot… thank you for that input, ill experiment

I voted for Riskbreaker. Good job everyone, though.
To Modron:
I said I would earn more votes than you before I realized that I wouldn’t have the time to finish my entry. Now, I know you would have kicked my ass out of this contest. Good work dude.
See you.
-IS-

backiz: that’s awesome! it’s very simple, artistic, and you captured (in my opinion) the feeling of samurainess… there is power and elegance… it’s almost perfect.

.b

Thanks Basse, Robertt and all other people for voting

My vote goes Robertt, because your work is the most complicated and complete. I was to lazy to model a full head and body. :expressionless: I did try to give it more 3d look, by extracting it, but that wasn’t really a improvement…

And Blengine, thx for non-participating. It’s just great.

Igor, don’t sell yourself short. And, yeah I did a good job this time, but I payed for it in mouse cramp. More by force of will than by force of skill. %|
