“Bonk machine” artist Alvar Gullichsen designed lots of fine looking gadgets and machines for odd use, ofcource they did not really do anything. Task is to create weird gadged or machine that has for example pipes, nuts, bolts, wires etc, looks fine, like it could have real use. Part of challenge is to explain shortly what machine does. Couple of examples and history of Bonk fake company so you get the mood.

Here it is: Basically it works like this - The lever is pushed forward, trnung the cogs which turn the chains. These rotate the other cogs and flip the cam. This provides a turning motion for the generator, which emits a powerful laser beam and activates a circuit with a motor twisting a screw. This pushes the bar away from the mallet bit and it falls down! A lot of useless trash.
Jogi, no, to display it here is best I think. To demonstrate the hardcore dedication of WC entrants. After all, winning is not the be all end all,…but to be in the game. The status of winning is merely dressing on the salad.

Here’s my pure entry, “The Wonder Chair”
It’s called the “Wonder Chair” because its inventor disappeared during its first test run, and so no one knows how it works or what it actually does. There are various theories about it. Some say it’s a time machine, others a teleporter or a remote viewing enabler, and others yet (mainly Stargate fans) insist it could be a portal to another world or dimension…
This is my little baby:
It’s a wireless-energy-backup-device
It’s based on mercury liquid. When the mercury is under high pressure it change to gas, which will move the turbine. (just like steam…). It works! To connect it to all your electric devices, just put the electric plug in the electric socket, and you will never have a powerfailure!.
hah, this is great… I visited the museum last summer again, and have thought about making those machines many times… I even thought abuot making a little site about the whole thing because I noticed it was closed down
for those that don’t really know Bonk business, the idea is, that they made GREAT machines to do all sort of stuff, like enhance the working atmosphere. then they noticed, that it’s actually cheaper to make the machines, if you don’t put all the stuff in it that is supposed… and that lead finally to the state, that they only produced machines that LOOKED cool, but didn’t have any working parts inside.
still, amazinly, they worked. people bought them, to their workplaces, to homes … and were VERY happy how they cleaned the air and made your life feel wondeful…
I just love bonk.
I hope I have time to do it, … and I think aready what to make.
oh, and as a final note, so that you will know, all the story and everything is invented of course, it’s a huge project by one finnish artist, coming from a wealthy family, spending ALL the family money making machines that don’t work
