Challenge #968 "Aircraft on Mars" (07/01/22) Entries CLOSED

Over the Runway

Pure entry, the main source of lighting is the point that I hid in the middle of the sun. Added a few other sources to keep the render from looking dull.

Hello again, well this is another open, mainly cause of the two astronauts waving at the aircraft.
Render at 500 samples + denoise, in cycles. The scene is from a different view, with some extra hills added.

Non-competing. Open. Features edge grunge, slope controlled terrain texture mixing, 2nd UV decals.

Quadcopter

Pure - the astronaut is sculpted on a base from MB-lab, so not 100% pure but it means most of what you see is my work. I used geometry nodes to bend the arms of the quadcopter, so the laden one has its rotor arms bent up by the weight it’s carrying. The rocks are made with the mesh rock generator, and distributed with geometry nodes. The building details and some details on the quadcopter were generated by the Random Flow plug-in.

Hoverboarding

Pure (from scratch) - I used Inkscape for “Major Tom’s Flakes”-advertisement and Gimp to adjust the overall contrast.
It’s morning on Mars, and the yellow school shuttle is on its way. Cool kids, however, hoverboard on a Marty McFly memorial board to school. All advertisements, street signs and the like are holograms. Hence, they are partly projected onto the road and can be flown through without danger.

Hah. I knew someone “else” was going to be working on Ingenuity!
Looking good

I believe ingenuity uses a counter propellor system so I think the propellors might rotate in opposite directions?

Honestly, I’m not sure.
My astro physics and mechanical engineering are like not a thing
Please know I am not judging at all, more of a curiosity for someone like @Millani who I perceive generally knows all the fancy mathy sciencey type stuff

@david.speer, thanks and lol. You made me look. It does use a counter rotation propeller system. My model does use a counter propeller system too but to be honest it was more luck than knowledge. I just grabbed a picture from NASA and modeled that and threw some animations on it.

Not sure why but this little helicopter never really excited me much. Technology-wise it just didn’t seem that exciting. More of material science and engineering vs. new science.

(I was incredibly lucky and got to work in the space industry [launch side] a long time ago for a few years and got to see some really cool stuff. Got to see three or four Shuttle launches. Now, that was something to see and feel. You could feel the rumble in your chest from miles away.)

Journey to Mars

Open. I reused the ‘mars’ planety thing I made for last weekend’s challenge. The spaceships are made from scratch. Except for the trees. I made them with the ‘sapling tree gen’ addon a while ago for my personal library.

Aircraft On Mars

This Is my first time competing and 100% pure, The ships I made a while ago and decided I would reuse them in this. The Gorge was from the Blender Landscape Addon with a few changes.

very cool. i agree kicking myself for not seeing a shuttle launch. maybe one day i can get to see one of the fancy titan v reworks that will kick a mars mission off.

I noticed a few things with NASA’s images, pretty funny the artist rendition on their website uses a completely fancied up solar disk for the solar array and the electronics and camera cube is all styled up.
The ones in the lab are super plain, not much going on there as you mention.
It’s a drone with a thermal box and a few legs. If there is life up there, they’re thinking, wow you earthlings dont have much in the way of design engineers do ya

Nice one! Welcome to the Challenge.
If you don’t mind, I’ll add the entry to the ‘open’ categorie, as the main focus of the image/the aircrafts were made prior to the challenge.

Wow! That must have been an incredible sight to see (and hear and feel)!

You could try to catch one of the upcoming SLS launches (if that should ever happen). They are using the old RS-25 space shuttle engines on those (4 engines in the first stage). Probably a good idea to have some earplugs ready.

Ok cool, I hadn’t realized that affected it, I was very glad to find this challenge as I too often just stare at the default cube wondering what to make. :grinning:

Aww, thank you, I’m flattered! It’s been a while since the last time someone told me I’m a nerd.
But I think @Helge @OLG and @purbosky know more of the spacy and aircrafty stuff, I just know the mathy stuff. :stuck_out_tongue:

After a long time of Blender inactivity and rediscovering this challenge … Getting my Blender feet wet again …

Mars-Earth shuttle zeppelin

Open entry: Everything done in Blender, using cycles, except:

  • planet Mars (image of ESA, OSIRIS, 2007),
  • display made in Inkscape,
  • stickmen made in Inkscape.

Indeed, the challenge can help with that. In the end, all the voting trouble is just a nice way of finding a fresh theme every week.

And the deadline helps to prevent you from getting lost in details. It is always nice to finish something instead of producing half finished pieces over and over again.

First time doing a challenge here, looking forward to doing more.

Title: Failed Landing

Open Entry: Everything made in Blender with Cycles except:
Terrain made in Gaea
Cloud VDB Import

Air Race on Mars, circa 2222

Open entry, using photo from Unsplash for background. Cycles render, procedural textures, postpro in Gimp.

Indeed the background might doesn’t look like Mars at all, speaking of near future, unless you want to imagine (heavily) terraformed version. Been trying to use Mars photos but the only part visible in the end were the top of mountains and the sky looks really empty, so tried to mix it with cloud images but the photo looked good already so discarded the real Mars one, lol.

Nah, actually just a hobbyist on that field as my major is more related to beams and columns, though I admit whenever I see spacy or aircrafty theme I mostly turn into this mode :

I might have to beg to differ on this, at least based on some (personal) cases …

For Blender’s sake we can assume it’s a default cube. :ice_cube:
