change scenes during animation

is it possible to change scenes during an animation? just a simple camera animation using 2.55

i would really like to fade out of one scene and into another

or is it better to render the two animations separately and then patch them together later?

if someone could point out a link or two, that would be great

i think i have the answer:

render the scenes separately then figure out the fades / transitions in the video editor
