Changing Texture/Material Depending on Lighting

I was working on a Earth model for an animation, and i was wondering if it is possible to have textures or materials change depending on how much light is shining on them. For example, on the light side of the Earth, it will show the day images, but on the dark side will show a different material/texture with city lights visible.

Here is a file that has what I’m looking for, however, it is made for the game engine. Not sure if this was done with scripts, nodes, or even if it can work with normal rendering . Not sure who this belongs to, but it was not made by me. If you know who this belongs to, please tell me.

Should give you some ideas. Don’t have Blender so didn’t look at file.

Thanks for the link, I have never seen that page. Too bad pages like that do not supply a BLEND file?

Thanks, but doesn’t seem to have what I’m looking for. I am trying to change texture depending on light, however, this has some cool tutorials that i could use on other things.

you can also use tangent in F5 panel to change the shading function of lights and camera direction

or you can add a reflection spec or mirror map to your images ect,
there are many tricks or ways to play with the rendering in blender

there are something like over 25 different type of map effects in blender
but you got to find theses in the wiki pages

hope it helps

salutations
