Character Animation. Would love feedback

Hi, I would love some feedback on this animation. I am starting to get into character animation and would love to know what I should work on. Rig is from Agora

I think it’s very promising for a start !
How did you proceed ? did you use a reference and animate the character on top of it ?

The motion is great, but it doesn’t show too much stylization. The character design shows some cartoony exaggeration, and it’s something we should find in the animation as well.

On top of that, this character is well known for his very dynamic poses, which we lose here :

If you want to look into realistic animation, use maybe a more neutral character with 100% human proportion.

Now if you are animating spiderman you need to put more intent both in the animation style, and in the character.

That said, it can be interesting to try a walk or a run cycle and see how you manage to add that style and characterization…

Keep up the good work !

I think it’s looking good!!

There are a couple of issues that I think could be improved. First, the character walks up, then preforms a tumble. That part doesn’t seem to flow smoothly, it happens like I said - walks up, then preforms a tumble. I think it’s lacking ‘anticipation’, part of the 12 principles of animation. Think it should be more walking along, anticipate the tumble, then tumble. Like maybe the torso should dip down and lean backwards, then upwards and lean forward as the tumble starts.

The tumble to standing pose at the end has kinda the same problem. I think it’s lacking ‘follow through and overlapping’. Only a trained gymnast could tumble and come to a standing still pose, most everybody else, including our spider buddy, would take a step or two before coming to a stop.

Now the tumble itself, that is really good! It flows and is smooth with good timing!

Thank you for posting this!

Hi thanks for the response! Yeah I used reference for the timing and spacing and then kind of animated based on how i felt for the rest of it. You are totally right about the lack of cartoony and dynamic poses. I used a basic human as a reference and didnt stray to far from it which I think is where I ran into a problem. When working on future animations Ill definitely keep that in mind. Thank you!

Yeah I definetely need to work on anticipation and follow through, I was focused on just making a decent animation that looked sort of realistic and lost those principles. Thank you for the response this is super helpful!
