Character design series: The Thumbee's -now with hair

I’m never getting any sleep anyway so here’s the main-actor in a new series of models
I’m working on.

http://www.hamsterking.com/blender/3d/thumbees10.jpg

The idea behind this “easy” character is to make a whole series of “him”, they’ll
have different clothes and equipment to reflect their personality and such.

I’ve wanted to make an animation short in Blender on as a “private project” for
a long time…actually in any software…but I’ve thought the process way too
cumbersome and annoying to work with…until lately …that is.

Because the Blender character animation tools have become so much easier
and friendlier to work with (and will become even MORE awesome during the
next few months if we’re to belive Ton & his awesome horde of coders) so
I’m working constantly in preparation of my little short. I have absolutely NO
clue what the short’s going to contain, but I want it to portray feelings, emotions
and the story with “classy” character that are “clean” too look at and no deform-errors
(kind of a pet-peewee of mine…I just hate bad character-animation with bad deformations)
Well - hate is a strong word…but I’m sure you get my drift, I want quality…that is.
(hm…Will I ever be good enough…gah!..Oh well…I can at least TRY!)
:expressionless:

Anyway…stay tuned for an update & more characters, they’ll get rigged too.
Now …I’m off to bed…(yawn!)

Great Character!

I love Cartoons, realistic modeling is for people who can’t afford cameras. :wink:

great model! I don’t know but looks like you were influence by the movie Chicken Run…if that is indeed the name but i love it!

Very nice model ;). Can’t wait to see the upcoming ones.

That…‘thing’, is it human? (I’m not trying to insult you, I was just curious)

I like the texture on it, it’s very smooth :slight_smile: how did you do that texture? UVMapping?

Wolf

That’s a great character what you’ve created JoOngle, nice and simple but it looks fantastic.The jumper texture is very nice and looks wonderful, did you UV map the jumper then add texture in photoshop/Gimp?.If you did it might be an idea to add a bump map under it just to make it stand out a little more. Can’t wait to see what you can do with this guy once you get him rigged as your last few animated pieces using the test version of blender were very nice.

I’m sure this guy and his mates will have a bright future ahead of them !!

Levi

@Calvin

Thanks.

@Vaccine0101

Thanks, Yeah - Aardman Animation rocks! But it’s not a character from any movie (although I’ve done fan-interpetations before…he he) this is NOT one of them. Thumbees are the character series names… :o I hope there aren’t any other series in the world with the same name, if so I’ll have to change it.

@foCus

Thanks, I’ll work on the series later tonight. Wonder if there’ll be any updates tonight? :wink:

@Wolf

LOL! No offence taken. I like jokes like that. (What the heck is THAT weird thing?! Looks like a puddle of plastic-clay stir fryed over a slow fire…or something)…dang…my Jokes
stink like yesterdays socks…

The texture is all UVMapping yes… No procedureals here.

@levi

Thank you, The map as you indicated - is made in the GIMP. I used that Gimpressionist plugin to create a nice seamless texture that looked somewhat like “textile-threads”. It already has a bump map…but maybe it should be more obvious. Hm…you got a point…maybe something to work on, the question is of course…will it be seen when
the character is in “TV-Size”? …we’ll see.

I hope so JoOngle :stuck_out_tongue: but I don’t want to rush you :slight_smile: but just a little bit because I want to see more.

Oh well…

I’ve updated the image a tad because of serious response on different
forums, I wasn’t going to do that on the main character…

…but what can you do? :slight_smile:

  • Native eyelids
  • Even cleaner facial
  • Cleaner feet
  • Nails on feet

Not quite sure if I want to have nails on the hands…nails are
generally not that cute…and I want things to look cute…

we’ll see…

Quit cute already. Reminds me of Wallace and Gromit or something out of Settlers.

@fasteddie

Thanks :slight_smile: that’s quite a compliment to get.

and now…for an Hairy-affair:

http://www.hamsterking.com/blender/3d/thumbeehair.jpg

Man…it took 4 hours to UV-map that “clay” hair… :expressionless:

Good work indeed. :smiley: Although a wood texture with Nor mapping might have saved you all that time.

Good work and a cool character.

Sonix.

Thanks :slight_smile:

But no…wood + nor map. would not work optimal, here’s why:

Wood-shader creates some weird “chipping” no matter where you x,y & z it…
without UV mapping …it would not be as clean as I’d want it.

Nice character.

But I think I prefer this guy without hair. Maybe try him with some Beast hair instead? I just don’t htink the “clay” hair suits him.

BgDM

I have to agree with BgDM, the hair looks great, and the character is amazing too, but I don’t really like the combination, perhaps use the hair on a second character :stuck_out_tongue: :D.

I especially tove the mouth and silly eyes :D. Good work.

Okay? Interesting…

Maybe I’ll use it on the second character, the sandals too really… I’m working on filling
out with a lot of accessories so I have a lot of items to create different characters
out of the “same thumbee”.

Basically because it’s easier to just rig ONE character that can talk and all and
then later CLONE it and displaying the various clothes & accessories so it gets a
different personality. Kind of like a bunch of smurfs really…

Realy nice character! He looks like the game-character in “Hobbit”!
I realy like the hair as it is now (Maybe you could put a colorband to get more volume to it?). Keep it up my man :wink:
