Yes, you do need to mess with the friction in the materials panel. In the materials panel (F5) you should see some color settings. Below those color settings are three buttons, RGB, HSV, and DYN. Click on the DYN button and play with the Friction slider.
EDIT: Minifig beat me to it 
Also, make sure you play with the friction setting of your ground, not the player.
