Cheating Hill

Hi!
I had this idea for over a year, and finally decided to create it.
What do you think? I would like to know your true and honest feedback to get better next time!

I have 2 versions, I can’t decide which one is more apealing:

Thanks to VMComix for the Cartoon Character Pack.
And for Andrew Price for the tree (Taken from the Architecture Academy in the Asian Foliage Pack)

Well…this sucks. I mean the situation  Great render
The one with the grass is better I think. The plain ground doesn’t go well with the detailed tree in the background.
What I would change is to show this from a closer perspective. I wouldn’t show the entire guy, only maybe the hand and the falling flowers, and then, in the center the couple. I would also change the colors to more grayish, more serious to convey his feelings.

really cool! im just amazed that one picture can tell a whole story, and i think the no grass looks better but hey thats just me. Great work

The good: You have story in this piece, which goes a really long way. It’s fun and pleasing, and gives off emotion.

The bad: It’s a little cheesy and kitschy and bare. There’s style clash, with a photo sky background, a semi realistic tree and then pure toon hills/characters. I would probably go more toon everywhere, so a simpler gradient sky, less real tree(s), grass is fine but go simpler. Also I would fill out more of the frame and enrich your whole scene. The lighting and materials don’t go together either, the characters are pure silhouette yet the tree is shaded. Better to match them.

The Ugly: As mentioned in your other WC thread neither the characters or the tree were modeled by yourself, which lowers the value some. When using other artist’s models you’ve saved so much time that you should spend it tricking out and tweaking your scene.

Thank you for the honest feedback!
I gotta say that everything you said crossed in my mind while I made it.
So about the ugly- I had that image in my mind that I had to make it real, so I don’t really care of getting shortcuts and “cheat” in the way… I know I hadn’t done much in this work (took me about a hour) but Im still proud about it.

The bad - the style clash also annoyed me way too much. I really thought about solutions but I had no idea what should I change. I might change the sky to something more cartoony and simple. The tree as well. The problem is that I don’t know how to do it
should I go gradient sky and low-poly clouds and tree? Will it make the job done?

Thank you for the feedback!

Thank you for the feedback!
At first I though to make the prespective like you said, but for some reason I changed the view. I will try later to make it by your advice.

I preffer the one that have grass

The grass version looks better! Very nice composition too…

I too prefer the grass version, it matches the style of the bouquet and tree more. Something that I do think looks better in the no grass version is the long shadows of the persons. If you can accentuate them in the grass version, especially for the poor guy up front, I think it would add a lot to the overall feel, those strong, stretched shadows add to that feel of, well, sadness :eyebrowlift2:

Really good render! It’s like a whole story …
