Chess Animation Number 15 by a Novice Blender User

Greetings!

I can’t believe that I made it to number 15. Anyways, here are pros and cons.

Pros:
I have figured out how to edit it better.
Soft body physics are getting easier for me.

Con:
Lighting this properly is still out of my grasp.
I need at add more to the background.
I want to blow up the king next time.
Everything else.

@Modron I added area lights; however, I think I made them too bright. Thanks for the advice.

@sozap I need to work on finding out what a parallax is. I try to get just one percent better each time. I will work on it again next week. Thanks as always.

Take care!

How about trying some spot lamps which would add focus on the active piece. Give them a ‘track to’ constraint?

Nice. I will make it follow the action. I will work on figuring out the track to constraint. Thanks!

On second thought, I don’t think a track to constraint would be the optimal thing. It would be better to have it hovering over the piece, and keyframe the lamp intensity.

The chess pieces don’t travel very far, so maybe just hovering would be better. I didn’t know that I could keyframe the lamp intensity. I might try the tracking later on. Thanks.

Yeah, just hover the cursor in the input field for the lamp intensity and hit I. Works the same for most things in Blender.

Haha it’s simple : when you take the train and look outside, objects that are closer move faster, and what is in the distance move slower. That motion gives a sense of depth.
If you add very slow motion camera move, rather than static shots, you get a better sense of the 3D scene for various reason.

I think in general it gets better, the actions are way more easier to read.
Some stuff are still a bit messy, but it takes time to improve !

That’s personal but I don’t like the first shot, it’s 3 camera moves that goes back and forth. It can be much simpler. Only one move , quite slow that turns around the board. You don’t need to make a pause at the end.

Something that could be great to add is a clue on how the scene is oriented.
Where is the black player and the white one. That can be signs on the table.
Because when the camera switch position, it can give the impression that it’s the chess pieces that changing places rather than the observer.

Hopes that helps, keep on practicing and improving !

That makes sense. I think I need to make one of the videos every two weeks instead of every week. I just think I need to spend more time making better. I want to work on planning each shot better. I am very glad that Blender is my hobby and not my job. I would probably go insane pretty quickly.

Thanks as always.

Yes maybe at this point you may benefit working a bit longer and do more experiments.
So the end result is a bit more polished. And at some point you should be able to go back to fast mode.

Hahaha !
