City Buildings

I started modeling these buildings quite a while ago and never got back to them. I decided it was time to work on them some more and build a city scene.

I appreciate how much work needs to be put in making a CG city.

Yes, it takes a lot of work and most of what I’m doing right now makes very little difference.

The original buildings you see here have no floors or walls inside, so the light shines right through the glass where I don’t use roughness or gloss. I’m currently hacking those out and then I’ll eventually add some inside lighting to give them more realism.

Yeah, that’s another big issue. You could also add interior furniture: some very low-poly desks, screens and chairs, like in the couple years old CG Geek tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFLtCi6yWnA.

I’ll probably use a particle system to scatter a few simple furniture pieces throughout the buildings.

Here is the start of a new building I made last night:

That last render in particular is really showing the potential of what you can do with this scene.

If you want to add the interiors an easy way to do this would be to box project an interior picture onto a cube with inverted normals and just position them behind the windows. Unless you’re planning on doing shots right up close to the windows projection mapping is definitely the way to go as no-one will ever be able to see close enough to notice and you’ll save a bunch of poly counts with only 5 faces per room, not to mention time!

I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to deal with the interiors yet, but I like your idea and will probably try it out. I currently have about 20 different buildings that I’m working on simultaneously, and I need to finish putting in the interior floors and walls and lighting before I decide how to proceed with that.
