Clocked In - Animation WIP - Freestlye

Hey I’m Ike Ah-Loe. I’m sort of new to the community and blender, so hello.

i’m working on a animaton right now called Clocked In.

WIPUP
I’ll be adding most of my updates on WIPUP:
http://wipup.org/projects/view/90/52/ or http://wipup.org/profiles/view/isaac/

  • there are some render tests, models, an animatic, etc on the page

Freestyle
I’ll hopefully be using freestyle for the all the rendering. Due to the current performance limitations and speed of freestyle, i may use the regular edge rendering system (super duper fast but limiting) and then use freestyle for when i need to do fancy things with the lines, because freestyle allows for all kinds of cool effects and possibilities. I’m also going to be hand drawing some of the effect of the background using Pencil. I wish someone would add a few parameters to regular edge system, like crease angle and thickness. (this would help so many people, threshold is not enough) that way i could ensure the freestyle stuff could fit in seamlessly with the otherr. Thanks in advance to T.K. and all the team for work on Freestyle. It’s really wonderful.
Here’s 2 tests rendered using Freestyle.

(no facial animation yet)

this is a test of some of the stuff i’ll be really using freestyle for

https://vimeo.com/16051975

then this is just using blender’s regular edges to see the difference. (newest test, testing some sound and a facial joystick control panel)

Modeling
I remodeled the main character from an old model i made in modo, but everything is remodeled in blender except the hair, which sucks so bad i don’t think it matters.
(i don’t have a picture, here’s an old walk cycle test, which i have since totally redone)

Next:Here is my first Blender only model, which will be the female character. It’s also my first head model not to use any guide for construction/topology but my own logic. I’m going to start on the body soon stay posted

Experience
I had no experience with blender before starting on this project. I’m learning this stuff as I go and have had great help from the community thus far. I’ll be sure to have their names in the credits. Thanks to anyone who has helped me out.

DIY/FOSS
all the software i’m using is free to use
all the music is by DIY punk bands or by myself
I’m also recording all the sounds

Software List
Blender: for modeling, rigging, animation, and some video editing and compositing
Kdenlive: Video editing and compositing
Krita: Digital Painting
Audacity: Audio recording (also available on OSX and Windows)
Ardour: also for audio recording
Linux Multimedia Studio: some music production stuff (also available for windows)

sorry for the long introduction, but i’ll be putting most of my updated on WIPUP and i wanted to get most of the details out in case anybody wanted to follow it.

Hmmm… i was just starting a project like this but you beat me to the punch to get the real progress made. Good work.

well i hope you still do your project! there needs to be more npr blender animations! let me know if you ever make a project page/blog about it.

also the freestyle team just made some awesome updates. one allows you to change the line style based on object groups, and more importantly they made a change to the “data structures”, which apparently helps the memory consumption a lot. so it should help render bigger scenes.

had a long hiatus where my computers were broken, i got up and running and finished modeling the female body

started messing around with hair, never really done it.

not using hair simulation as this will be toon rendered and that would be unnecessary. this way is easier to rig and animate.

i also threw a poncho thing around the model for decency reasons, but clothes will come

Testing some camera motion

just a question, but i was wonder…what is this Freestyle your talking about?
also, how did you get that type of black and white texturing with all the hard outside lines and the soft inner white???
it looks like a paper drawn sequence…man i wish i could have an effect like this

Wow this looks like a really cool project!

@ Moon Moose- Freestyle is a render engine, best way to get it probably is a custom build from graphicall. Never used it, but it looks like it is working fine here. http://freestyle.sourceforge.net/

nice thanks

hey Evil Moon Moose, if that is your real name…

i’m using a mix of the freestyle experimental renderer being worked on for future versions of bender and for a lot of it i’m using blender’s default edge rendering option.

i’d use freestyle for everything but it’s not ready quite yet for a full project, the main thing is it take forever to render and will not render some larger scenes with a lot of info - at least not on my setup, which is semi-highend. (3.06 i7, 8gb ram, quadro nvidia card).

secondly it’s a bit buggy and random lines are often rendered.

freestyle will be amazing by the time it is merged.

first
No its not my real name, my real name is Jeffrey Bright
and second, where would i find this option?

the regular blenderedge system is under the rendering button/tab (icon looks like a camera)… then scroll down and check “edges” under post-processing, the only control you have over it though is one “threshhold” slider, so that sucks, but after all it’s only a visual trick, it’s not a real line system like freestyle.

for freestyle find a build on graphicall.org find info on how to use it +general info on the freestyle thread on here and on the freestyle blog.

thanks! i alread got freestyle last night, something you might like though is NGplant, which allows you to make .obj plants super easy :stuck_out_tongue:
