I am clothing a figure in 3 steps: a) Rigging the clothing mesh to move with the figure
b) Applying the posed armature modifier to the clothing mesh
c) Using physics cloth to drape the clothing on the figure
I have a some basic questions:
How do I stop the figure from showing through the posed clothing? I can improve things with careful weight-painting at the joints, but I can’t seem to stop it.
How do I stop the clothing mesh from passing through itself? Self-collision is a feature of the physics cloth, but not of the rigged cloth. Again, careful weight-painting helps, but not much.
I have not found a good tutorial covering this. One that looks promising is missing most of its images:
i personally wouldn’t use soft body physics for clothing (at least at the moment/unless there is some significant improvement for that feature) but concerning your other questions:
1.I always hide body parts which i don’t need with the mask modifier or better yet delete them (unless you will have a scene where you show your model naked, there’s really no need for them)
2.There will always be poses for your rig where your model behaves totally crazy and goes through itself. the key is to have all poses you really need working. also: you can have still acceptable results with significant “going through itself”.
the bottom line is: fake it. You will never have a totally realistic result. and the time spend on getting there is sometimes not worth it: all you need is an rigg that’s working (i.e. believable enough) from the one perspective which is important: your camera.
Thanks very much for your reply - it helps a lot. Meanwhile, I am just now discovering the sculpt tools and they seem to be perfect for correcting some of these problems.
