Cloud layer over a planet in space with cycles

Hey guys,

I am trying to do the whole planet body with layer of clouds and third layer for atmosphere. I am using blender 2.91 and all of the tutorials i can find are using something older or eevee rendering. I have my nodes set up like so. I can’t get the clouds to be the only thing I see. The blackness is not going transparent and I can;t see the planet below. The preview of the texture looks transparent but it just is not. Can anyone clear this up for me?

here is what the planet underneath looks like.

Try plugging the alpha, rather than the color, into the mix fac?

nah that didn’t work

Have you set properties->render->light paths->transparency to 0? If so, increase it.

If still no luck, upload your .blend file?

(also, probably not the issue, but I don’t think you need to plug image color into diffuse node - just leave the diffuse a flat color.)

YES. that was the issue. so dumb. transparency set to 1 wasnt enough
