cmiVFX: From Blender to V-Ray

I’m glad I can finally announce the release of the second part of the Blender to Vray course!
Originally I wanted to do one big tutorial and pack everything into that, but I found it would have been much too long. That’s why I decided to split the tutorial into 2 parts. Actually it would be 3 parts, if you count in the already published free introductory tutorial as well (http://www.vimeo.com/25793918).

In this part of the tutorial you will learn everything about the rendersettings, image-sampler, color-mapping and a bit of lighting, materials and textures. We will discuss the Lightcache and Irradiance Map settings, and also learn how to setup the so called universal settings.
In the next weeks I will publish a follow-up to this tutorial where we will do one architectural project from scratch. In that tutorial, which will be the third part of this series, we will cover texturing, Vray-Proxies, particle instancing and scattering, compositing of render-elements, texture baking and so on. Lots of cool features, but the foundation for that will be laid in this tutorial:

Thanks for this tutorial Sebastian, this comes just in time since I’m doing a project with Vray.
This way I know what to do this weekend. And I’ll be looking forward to part 3.

I lost somewhat overview but how far does Blender now support VRay?

Are all lights, materials, and GI types functional now?

It’s pretty much feature complete now, i would say.

Hi Sebastian!

Looks great, as always!
However, at the moment the download of the project files doesn’t seem to work. Tried with Firefox and Safari, neither of them works.

Oh, that’s bad. I’ll try to look into it ASAP. Or better to say, I try to make the guys at cmiVFX to look into it! I don’t have access to their webshop / site…

Hi Sebastian,

Great video mate. Just started chapter 3 and loving your easy teach manner.I took advantage of cmiVFX siggraph 50% discount offer. Also picked up both Nathan`s rigging tuts.
Look forward to your next architecture installment.

Again Thanks,

Ian

Sebastian, thank you for creating this tutorial series, Because of your video, I made the jump and picked up a license of v-ray and have been having a blast using the pair!

I never realized just how well bdancer had blended the two programs. I already purchased his scripts to support the project, but for as much work as he has put in to it, I wish I could do more.

Thank you again, I’m very much looking forward to your next video in the series

Awesome! Good to hear that!

VRay is the ticket for Blender to be accepted also in the professional world of rendering and yes BDancer did an amazing work.

Blender has very good animation and modeling tools and VRay takes care of professional grade rendering in any style you need.

cekuhnen, I am very impressed with the speed and quality of vray. I have been using the Modo/Maxwell combination for a long while, but after watching the development speed of Blender 2.5, I realized that I was hoping for features to be added to Modo that already existed in Blender…

I knew of vray and the impressive work people had been doing with it, but never happened to use any supported apps. Seeing Sebastian work with it from inside Blender and It didn’t take me long to break down and grab a license.

The tipping point was discovering that you only needed a standalone license of V-Ray, that was an awesome deal

To anyone watching this thread who is on the fence, here is the reseller that I went through (For those of you in the states), they were super quick at processing my order, and even overnighted my dongle. Very quick and painless.
