colour preferences

One of the few problems I have with Blender is that while there is some great documentation out there - it is hard to find specifics - is there an index somewhere where one could find simple things like “panning the image” (example only - I know how to do this)

My current problem, as you will see by the attachments, is the colours in Edit and Object mode – these are unuseable - how can I change the colour preferences to something more usful?

Your problem in the left image above, is that you are actually in “Face Select Mode” and not “Object Mode”. Press “F” to get out of it.

Thanks but thats not the problem - even out of face mode I still get the same problem
