Combine/Merge Strips in VSE

I have 2 strips that i have combined and placed a gamma cross on.

I want to now add a speed control layer over the entire section. In my brain, I feel like I need to combine these items into one strip so that I can apply the effect.

Is that the best way to do this? Regardless, how do you combine strips into one strip.

Thanks!

“Regardless, how do you combine strips into one strip.”

I’ed like to know that too!

…But also how do you combine a selection from one strip on to another? I mean in terms of using Gamma or Alpha and I guess a mask?

you could render it and add the renderd strip in a new project…
but then you couldn’t make changes any more.

I thought Sdyarnell meant in the VSE as a simple function.

A picture in picture video effect would be useful…as well as a selection in picture effect?

I did. I simply meant I want to be able to press a shortcut key and have the selected strips and associated effects be merged into one unit on the VSE.

You can group the by pressing [Ctrl]+[G] if this is what you want. To enter (or left) the group you can press tab. But it doesn’t have any other effect than to change the layout of your clip.

I expect a simple python script could merge the two strips. With a slider to chose how much of each one.

If ever a python script was simple!!

Adding multiple strips together is as simple as creating a Meta-strip, as @abcxyz suggests. This will mean that you can add an effect strip to multiple media strips at once. Where normal they can only be added one strip at a time.

Making Meta-strips is an expected process in the VSE and often allows workflows that could not be possible otherwise.

You could stack different version of an animated shot inside a meta-strip as you make revisions. And you can place both the video and sound of a camera clip inside a meta-strip to make sure that they stay in sync as you drag them around.

Is that anything like merging two video clips one on top of the other??

How do you actually do that in Blender?

I noticed you did n’t actually say that it was!

You don’t have to use vertically stacked strips to make a meta strip. Think of a meta strip as 2 or more people tied together in a 3 legged race. They have to move together but can still be broken apart to alter independently. So no rendering needee

Excuse me for being stupid about this; but where is the output without being rendered??

A quick look in Mastering Blender reveals Compositing as the way to video output.

While the book seems to have used the Add and Multiply for its cover image it seems to say there is no way to alter the Effects strength??

Blender has 3 ways to export to a file.

  1. Render direct from 3d view
  2. Render from compositor
  3. Render from vse

the last 2 must be selected in the scene properties panel of render settings. While you can perform a dissolve between clips in the compositor its easier to make timing decisions in the vse.
