This is a project I’ve been working on for the last several months. It’s my attempt to render the book version of the end sequence to 2001 A Space Odyssey (as well as a whole bucketload of crazy pyschadelic stuff like the film did). Except possibly for the pyshadelic stuff, it doesn’t have the professional quality of most of the other shorts flying around (mindfields, Cyan Sun…), but then I’ve only been blending 1 year. It’s turned me into something of a tea junkie, but I aim to have it finished (not necessarily uploaded to the net) by Sunday, because I’m on holiday then. Comments are welcome, criticism too as long as it’s constructive.

Will you be setting this animation to Pink Floyd’s Echoes? I read the whole thread @ solarflare, you mentioned it, and said it would be easy to guess, but you didn’t actually say it.
Looking good. i especially like the pictures of the space station thing, the sphere’s with the latices connecting them, and the picture of the Discovery over a star (I think). The motion blur adds a lot. The special effects are cool to. Keep up the good work.
One thing that hurt my eyes is in the pic with the ship getting out of a big station (I presume)…there is way to many starts in the background! Maybe it’s intentional, if yes then it’s ok…but if you wanted to make a normal space…it should be less…bah anyway the overall is awesome!
If you want some cool space pictures to add in the background check out the hubble telescope site. It’s got high res tiff images you could easily convert to JPG or TGA
Your project looks good. Can’t wait to see it. I first saw the original movie when it came out in 1968. I was six years old and I didn’t have a clue what was going on and kept bugging my older brother for explanations. You can imagine how old I am.
AROtotheN : Guess I was dead wrong about the music being easy to guess… The 90-second piece I was referring to was the Strauss music used in the original film (Also Sprach Zarathrustra, and because the video is now much longer than originally planned, I’ll also fit in most of the Blue Danube too). I’m afraid I’m a classical music fan rather than Pink Floyd but never mind Thanks for reading the whole thread by the way !
Goo : Thank you ! Motion blur is present is some form in most frames but for some scenes (like the nebula and the lattice) I just couldn’t stand 20-minute render times (only 5 min for the lattice, but I did this very recently and time is ticking away).
X-WARRIOR : Thanks ! The stars are not intentionally high in number (although in another scence, it’s apparent that the lattice-thing is near a globular cluster, so perhaps it should be intentional), but I can’t see too many of them…blame it on my monitor facing a bright window.
cree : good idea, although it would make it harder to animate with the camera moving. Fortunately only a very small amount is in deep space…the rest is taken up with giant space stations, a wormhole, nebula thing etc etc., and 4 minutes of really crazy stuff (described as “epileptic” by one person - who only saw an 8-second clip)
I only saw the film about 2 years ago…I’d already read the book but forgot it, so the ending was…huh??? :-? Then I re-read the book, saw the film again, and thought : Oooooooh !!!
GFXIdiot : You’re right, unless my maths is rubbish…
Now on with the rendering…lots left to do and not much time left to do it in…
I’m modelling the very last scene right now… no idea how I’ll get it down to a small enough filesize to post to the net through my puny 56K modem though (7 min 18 secs so far)…may have to post in segments. It should be done in 2 weeks, because I’m off on holiday very soon.
