Commodore SX-64. A retro WIP project.

I don´t know if you´re “old” enough to remember it from the childhood
days, but I certainly do - and I have two of them: Commodore SX-64.

If you´re into retro computing, this one is for you. Only produced by a few thousands, sought after by collectors everywhere
this is one of…if not THE very first portable with a Colour screen.

The SX-64 sports a Commodore-64 computer complete with a 1541 Floppy disk drive and a sweet little 5" color monitor…all bundled into one computer. (search google for SX-64 if you´re curius, or wait until it´s finished).

What you see above you is the SX´s powerhouse. It´s molded-solid-steel
and is of military quality.

For your information: it´s modeled in Blender 2.37 + Yafray as a renderer. the whole Backpart as seen on the picture is ONE mesh only, no joined
meshes or booleans at all. Very complex structure for obvious reasons, but fun to do.
This is my little retro-computing hobby fun project that I will keep nozzling
on when I have the time.

Atari 800XL is a rockingly cool computer! I´ve had that one myself way
back in time.

Actually…I missed that Atari so much that I´ve ordered one on Ebay
and are still waiting for it to arrive (hm…hope I haven´t been scammed)…

I do have my VCS 2600 (original model with 6 buttons) still though…

Talking for old computers my father had an Amstrad until I was 3

Commodore 64. The one that started it all for me. I played games like Impossible Mission and Summer Games, both classics by EPYX.

You bet, all quads! Everything is bevelled to the minute details.
In this case it´s hard to show wireframes because they are VERY packed
because of the bevelling. But stay tuned. More detailing soon!

It makes you wonder why did they create a plastic case with so many ridges? It can’t possibly be for heat transfer (plastic is a terrible conductor of transferring heat).

All of those ridges looked cool when new, but like crap when the thing got dirty.

Hahaha… You´re right. I do belive it´s for the design of it. Makes it
look soooo …80´s. Would have been easier for me if it was designed
clean without them, belive mere …there are MANY more ridges to come.

Thanks man. Front part? Haven´t done the front yet. It´s the behind.
But I can tell you my standard procedure for making clean - neath
bevelled models:

  1. Create the smallest most basic model you can get away with and
    try to remember what Blenders “Bevel-everything” will do to your mesh.
    This way we can get away with only bevelling what we want rather than
    everything.

  2. Edgeloop where you want complex bevels.

  3. Extrude faces where you want standalone bevels.

  4. Edgeloop for controlling the subdivision surfaces (curves/corners).

  5. Always manually repair what Bevel messed up :slight_smile:

The trick is to cross-loop edgeloops. This gives great manual bevel control
and everything will stay on quads.

Yah…very incomplete, but I am working on it - step by step.
It´s very complex because every mesh is built manually with no booleans
and bevelled carefully. All subsurf (subdiv) curves must be carefully
placed and every edgeloop must match and be useful…very tricky.

…But fun.

you should be able to see that I actually HAVE the SX-64 :slight_smile: and the
model is pretty close no?

I knew you had it and I agree that your model is excellent. Don’t want them mucking up your thread.

I´m quite privileged to own two of these SX-64´s. They´re getting
harder to come by - every day.
