Community Projects: Let's Do Them Already

I’ve noticed there aren’t enough community projects around here. If we need to have things put up and saying “Wanna Do This?” then so be it. Though I’m sure you guys could come up with infinitely better ideas, here are a few bits we could do:

Movie Project:
Lightning Strikes

B. Young is a gangster whose goal in life was to make it to the top of his game–until he was forced to kill a family. When his boss, Alex “Lightning” Livingstone, hears that he won’t kill anyone, he hires some “Lighters” (gangsters who go extremely fast, similar to Lightning) to persuade Young to do an important job, or he will be killed. Young agrees, but he seems to have an independent plan, whether Lightning likes it or not…

Game Project:
Karma

In a distant future, a young man or woman wakes up with no recollection of his/her past. Well, all but one small, unimportant bit: S/he believes in karma. Thus begins his/her adventures where the player, free to do whatever, will be pursued by the police, go through the afterlife, venture through human relationships, discover ancient civilizations, and/or do anything s/he wants. But one thing is for certain: It may all come back to haunt him/her…

Contest Project:
The “Shorty” Contest

As a bi-monthly project for those with way too much free time, imagination and hard drive space, but little to do with it, the Shorties are a way of increasing the number of shorts made by the community.
The objective is simple: Make a short within 6 weeks. The remainder of the 2 months will be used for voting. Categories are selected at random, with a winner’s suggestion being more likely to come out (others are supplied by the community and other participants).
The best of the best entries will be entered into a yearly contest called the “Beasties.” This Oscar-like awards show has the community voting for which they thought was the best of the best, as well as sub-categories for the best of certain genres (comedy, horror, drama) and Oscar-esque categories (i.e. eye candy, sound, performances). All participants of the Beasties can make an “acceptance speech,” in which they themselves or their creations thank the Community for voting for them, as well as anyone else they’d like to thank.
There are few rules: First, the entries must somehow be related to the main concept of the entry time. Second, all entries must be recieved by the date specified. Next, entries can have any kind of content (sex, nudity, violence, language, thematic elements, and any imagery involving that kind of stuff) is allowed as long as you warn us up front. A rating system may be used, but content must be described at least as what it involves. Also, a summary should be given. Plus, you will have fun whether you like it or not. (Steven Soderbergh, on the front of the script of “Full Frontal”) And finally, other than that, you can do whatever.
BTW: We’d need a website with lots and lots of free space…

BTW: Here are two ideas as to how we can help along the former two projects: “Send Them Something,” where you send them something cheap (like vegetable seeds, pencils, whatever); and “Let Them Choose” to let people choose little things like props or characters that they want to model, animate, whatever.

man with all the stuff you post you could have writen a book by now. always proposin… why dont you just do something or find a nice chat channel

well… I’d be interested in a community project… one idea I saw was 2 people deisgning a Billy Goats Gruff tale on CGTalk contest… as they designed and sketched ideas they posted up on the forum in the same post and you could see the idea come to life! I thought it was well interesting as I caught it half way, and found myself finding it again a week later to catch up on what happend… not much more was proposed, and they didn’t get 1st, 2nd OR 3rd place… but I thought they handled the planning really well I enjoyed it alot… pushing each other to get it done as they only had a week or afew days to get it done… the other great thing was you had other members of the boards offering advice and support by saying they liked the ideas to boost the drive so much more to get it completed… community stuff is great… espeically when you have people in key areas like textures, composition, help and ideas from wandering interested souls…

Well… an idea I’d like to help with would be something along the lines of… no guns!! no shooting or killing… I play too many FPS games or are seeing a big increase of games which are getting hyped up on graphics and killing monsters… it’s all the same just trying to be bigger levels stunning graphics…

Remeber the first 3d games? or the beginning… say on Amiga (I mention this as I still have a box for a game called Conqueror… … . also turbo outrun!!! great music  )… and I read on the back that all models were created by 1 man… ok they looked like what would now be called cruddy boxes… but it didn’t take long… like the game Virus. same type of ‘engine’ and view but controled with the mouse… you had funny sounds from incoming ships… the game commando for the BBC… chucking grenades at mens feet and running up the screen to reach the end…

I’m sure this has been attempted brainwashing many many times before to keep it simple… but it does cut the initial creation process down as you think about gameplay more and not to mention… FUN!

Also the idea of making fake 3d games get to me at times… tricking the eye… you have eyes which can give distance and colour and I don’t like the idea of loosing my sight or needing glasses (for all I know it could help out my understanding of life so much more, but I’m unawares of this so far and like to keep myself the way I was born… HAH… man I’m funny… )…

You’re looking at a monitor screen right now… or the majority of you anyway… a flat 2d screen… why not leave the fun ‘3d’ for your life outside your house and have fun 2d for inhouse?

crazy man! :expressionless:

ok so I was playing BF1942 not so long ago… and some CS… had some nice games actually :stuck_out_tongue: but it’s killing AND 3d… but it’s all I have for the PC… ok I could try card games and what not but I’m lazy…

if you want to see my idea for a game idea I’ve posted one below… I’ll let you find it, you can check the name of the author can’t you?

It’s very brief… but so are cubefans ideas  maybe we just need to get the ball rolling!

ciao! :Z

Well Cube,

A post finally worth reading. Your “Shorty” idea is very good. I would be willing to be involved in organizing something like this provided there is enough interest. It would be like the Weekend Challenge on steriods.

Input anyone??

Threequestions about your shorty idea: What’s your definition of a short movie? 5 minutes? 2? And would you have to create the models from scratch every time like in the weekend challenge? It sounds interesting, although I don’t think you’d actually have too many participants.
And are you thinking only blender? or real video with blender stuff in it? or other programs too?

Goo

  1. Question: How long would the shorts be? Answer: Any amount of time. From 1 minute to 60 minutes (though that would probably be unrecommended–lots of space).
  2. Q: Would you have to build new models each time? A: I really don’t know. If the moderators wanted to do this, they would have more control over the rules, but I would say, “What the heck, you can use older models.” Just as long as you did it to speed up the process and focus on the story, it would be fine with me.
  3. Q: What would we use? A: Well, preferably Blender for most everything. Some things we can’t do in Blender (sound and such) would be okay to use other programs. As long as you model, animate, and/or render in Blender, it’s eligible. As for formats, I again have no say, though I’d prefer DiVX.

Um, what kind of book? A composition of rants or a novel?

sounds good, though i feel a say 3 min limit would mean thst it is a little fairer… Though if it were longer, ppl could enter the projects that they are doing sepertly from the contest… hmmm.

OH LOL hahaha

hard to not laugh

oh sorry, couldnt stop myself

who are you to talk about community projects cube?

get a life.

one minute you’re complaining about blender 2.28 not a week after 2.27 was out, when you have done NO WORK WHAT SO EVER, then you post BS for days on end that could push people away from the community, then you come here a direct us to do something like you’re some kind of god.

i wish you would just shut up for a change, i’m getting so sick and tired of hearing this crap all the time.

you come here to tell ME to get involved, when you yourself have done nothing to further blender yourself.

:frowning: :o :x %| [!] :expressionless: :<

Exactly!

lo those goats kicked ass XD

annnnnnyway, im bored, so id be in for everything lol/

To anybody who criticizes Lil’Cube, consider how much more replies and views almost each of his threads get over those of people who actually have something to say and/or are actually bringing something to Blender and the Community : his success is many times over that of real contributors. When you criticize the kid, what does that tell you about your role in his game ?

And Cube, whenever you find the strength to stop ridiculing yourself publicly, let me know. I am curious to learn if you’ll ever outgrow or just plainly outlive your stupidity, but I’m not willing to be a spectator of your humiliation no more than I’ve been in the past.

One idea that I’ve always liked (this is taken from other communities, mostly gaming) is a pass-around project.

What happens is people sign up to work on a project with a central theme. Each person gets a few (3-4) days to work on the .blend, then he/she must pass it on to the next person. Obviously the .blend would get retty big after awhile, so a dedicated host and fast upload/download speeds are a must, but it would be cool. After about a month, it gets passed to whoever will rig lighting and rendering, and we see what happens.

What do you think? Any takers?

Ric

A pass-the-blend-file-around has been done before (Cessen started one a couple of years back). I partcipated but eventually it got to someone who didn’t have time and it fizzled.
For this to work, it would need to have a definate theme such as building a city, spacecaft, or some mech-thing. I would contribute by starting it if there are any other takers.

Pofo launched the Blenderville idea some times ago, he ‘sold’ plots of land from a .blend terrain and people were to build their own house over that plot, with a given maximum of faces.

Very cool project, we were more than 20, but, again, it was never finished…

Stefano

Community projects have the tendency to fail misserably,…
Best is to work in a small team with people you know,… or work on your own.

Excuse me? I don’t recall complaining about 2.28. If you would be so kind as to point out where this is…

If the people get pushed away from the community by what I post, then they’re rather impressionable, seeing as how they leave this community over what one person is saying. That’s like saying that a movie’s no good and then leaving because you see an error early on.

And since when am I telling you what to do? I don’t think I ever say anything like, “Do this or you shall have to answer to me, the Blender God.” I know perfectly well that I’m not THAT good at Blender, and that’s part of the reason I put up the first two ideas for community projects: Because they’re so ambitious, even I can see that I wouldn’t be able to do them.

Timothy: Again, I know community projects fall flat on their faces most or all of the time, but I think that proper organization and someone with too much free time on his hands would allow for a possible working community project.
