I am trying to make a small easy scene, with my diskman and a few CDs, will use Yafray as rendering engine.
Problem, as u might have figured out by now, is making the crazy reflections on d back of the CD, like in this ref. pic:

I tried using Dispersion to fake it, but, couldn’t get it to work…
Any idea on how I might be able to acheive it?

You might be able to use a color ramp on the material to fake some of the brighter colors and then use small lights in the scene to fake reflected light on other objects and use normal reflections ot finish up. That’s mainly a guess, though, as I am better at the texturing than the lighting aspect of things, and still learning myself.
You’ve got a challenge ahead of you, that’s for sure.
Radial Blend Texture with color bands. This image has two separate radial blends applied as UV maps. Not a very convincing example but it will give you a place to start. Add a bit of ray mirror and pump up the fresnel “Fac:” slider just a bit…somewhere >1.25 but <1.5. I find mirror objects one of the most difficult materials to get right, probably because I’m too lazy to read the docs. To make it look like a real CD you’ll probably have to endure a lot of pain or hope that Fligh responds.

RamboBaby: I thought of the radial blend earlier, but then saw that the colors dont always change radially, as in the ref. pic in my first post on this thread. Compared to this, it might be a better idea to just stick on an image tex, and make it fresnel reflecting…
I was thinking maybe its because I still dont know materials and textures so well, that I am not able to make it, but maybe it really is tougher than i expected…

It’s not easy and it’s not perfect. I did that a long time ago and I’d have to look at it again to figure out how I did it if you can’t work it out from the blend.

This is a combination between the materials node setup I was playing with and the .blend that Fligh posted. The color transformation works very well but I ran into a problem with the separation between the colors. The problem is that the separations (a separate texture) need to rotate around the local z axis of the disk based on view coordinates while their center point remains pinned to the center of the disk. As it stands currently these separations are pinned to the UV layout of the disk and do not rotate with the view. I’m fairly confident that this can be achieved with some combination of the math node but I just don’t know how to go about it. I hope that someone with a good understanding of the math node will jump in and show us all how it’s done.

Fligh: Thanks a lot!!!
It is quite easy,although not perfect, and a nice clever use of color bands on a radial blend with proper Map Input, and, easily customizable… but… it is faking it, and although much better than an image texture, it isn’t the same thing…
Also, I’m thinking of using it with another tex (blend most prob with a colorband thats not a complete VIBGYOR) so that the bands dont appear to be radial, hope it works out to give a satisfactory result.
RamboBaby: Sorry, I’ve been putting off learning the Nodes system for a long time, time to get that done… Couldn’t get most of what you said, will check it after I get comfortable with the Nodes…
I’m right at home with the composite nodes but I’m not comfortable with the material nodes either. I just know that there’s some mind blowing possiblities available with them that can’t be had any other way.
