Compiler Performance

Being a frequent user of Blender, I thought about compiling a highly optimized Intel Core 2 Duo version so my animations would render out faster compared to the Windows installer version which is catered for blended processor performance. I was surprised by the results.

System:

  • Asus P5B Motherboard
  • Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 (1.8GHz)
  • Corsair 2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM

Optimization Compiler:

  • Intel 10.1

Here’s a single frame render from a 500 frame intro movie I’m working on:

Time to Render:

  • Standard Blender: 57.5 seconds
  • Optimized Blender: 41.5 seconds

This render does not take into account the time required to add motion blur, which is almost 8x longer than that render. But we’ll work on a simple scale instead.

Total Estimated Time:

  • Standard Renderer: 57.5 * 500 frames = 7.9 hours
  • Optimized Blender: 41.5 * 500 frames = 5.76 hours

With Motion Blur / Animation Enabled: (actual recorded times)

  • Standard Blender: 88 frames at 8 hours
  • Optimized Blender: 110 frames at 6 hours.

One thing’s for sure. I will never use standard builds of Blender again :wink:
