Completely lost with smoke

I’ve tried 2 or 3 different tuts I found on google, but every time I try to make smoke my view port looks ok but the render is just a cube(my domain) that looks completely filled with the smoke.

My ultimate goal is to make some fog effect for a stage, like at a rock concert where the smoke trails along the ground.

Is there another way to do this, or do I need to keep searching for smoke tuts that might make sense to me?

Are the tutorials for recent versions of blender.
If so it sounds like you are not watching the tutorials closely enough.

With the default cube selected press the spacebar and search for smoke. Select Quick Smoke. This will create a smoke sim. You may have to scale down the smoke emitter in object mode to get a clearer result. Save your file and Bake the smoke simulation. Render a frame, does it look correct. If not show us your results, if it does you need to pay more attention when watching tutorials.

Ok, the quick smoke looks right.
The tuts were for 2.5 and 2.6 so fairly recent. I’ll try to find another that’s maybe specific to 2.68 and see where I went wrong.
