Composite Nodes for the absolute beginner

I had a pretty hard time to understand nodes, and the tutorials I found had quite awkward examples (look! it’s an inverted image!).

So I sat down and tried to figure out myself, going fot the color bleed / overbright / halo-ish effect that was intensively used in Elephants Dream.

I made a flash tutorial:

It is aimed at people who want to understand composite nodes, the final effect is pretty much a side product.
I would like to know from beginners whether it’s really for beginners and from experts whether I’m going the right way here.

Thank you all! I would like to make it public domain, but I’d like to have it reviewed by someone more experienced with nodes. As I said, this is just the way I figured it out myself, and I would like to have it qc’ed before.

I’ll have to do some cleanups anyway. So please Composite experts, what do you say?

I’m not sure whether I would consider myself an expert, but it’s easy to understand (as easy as nodes actually) and a usefull effect.

Can someone tell me it the Composite Nodes tut is still available? I click on it and nothing happens, I just get a blank white window with the main banner still there.

hmm, unfortunately, it takes forever to load and then it hangs at 38%…

could you temporaryily upload your flash animation somewhere for download? it’s kind of difficult to review something that you can’t see smart-ass-wink.

That happens when you use IE and disable ActiveX Controls. I just copied the HTML that Wink creates into my site, dunno why IE needs ActiveX for that.

For the loading times: Should be ok with any DSL, video tutorials do have their sizes, and Flash is far better than avi with voice over.

nice clear tutorial. i didn’t know you could use a uv/image editor window to preview the viewer nodes! thanks for the very helpful tip and nice tutorial.
