Compositing preview (workaround)?

I know that a render preview is in the works, but all i need is some kind of quick way to see how my compositing will fit over the render. I’ll explain more:

Without getting into too much detail, what i am using blender for is to show a client what he is going to get via a 3D render. On the render i put our company logo over top of the render results with compositing nodes. The problem comes in when i try and line up the camera so that i am getting the most of the subject in the shot while avoiding getting the logo over top of the subject. It does not sound like a big deal but when you are lining up 24 of those shots and re-rendering each of them until they are just right, it gets really annoying, and takes up a lot more time with a slow computer.

Like i said, i know there is not a render previewer yet, but if you guys can think of some way to temporarily speed up the render time, or quickly see how how the compositing will fit over the render results, that would help me and my co-workers out a lot.

I am happy to answer any of your questions to help you better understand my situation,
Thanks guys

Hmmm… If I understand the problem correctly… you could make a plane that is the same aspect ratio as your output (16x9 e.g.) parent a plane to the front of your camera and use an image map w/your composited elements on it (the compony logo with an alpha channel, e.g.). Then you can use GLSL shading and you’ll have a fairly close approximation of where the composited elements will be situated.

That’s a pretty good idea, and i might be able to get it to work. However, I adjust the zoom (focal length) on each camera most of the time, and the plain will have to be adjusted along with the it. I could probably handle that but i am in the process of training other people to use blender so i am trying too keep things as simple as possible.

Any other thoughts?

You can use it as a background image for you camera. of course, this doesn’t composite anything on TOP of what you’re doing but it will give you a quick visual reference…

Aren’t background images only visible in ortho from a top, front, or side perspective?

I just tried it. That works perfectly!

Many thanks my friend!

Glad it worked!
