I have a lamp following a path around a torus object. In the compositer I set a glare node. In the compositer backround I get the effect I wanted but it does not show up in the render.
I am using Blender 2.61. Can anyone figure out what I am doing wrong?

is the glare node connected to the output node?

Make sure that in the Render panels, Post-Processing -> Compositing is checked, and as daren pointed out, that the final output of your node tree is connected to a Composite output node (rather than a Viewer node).
