Could you suggest me useful links, tutorials or books which cover composition?
This is a good one

After that, look at this -

there are just a few basics
golden ratio
and rule of thirds
then toss out the book
Golden rule? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?” I don’t understand what that has to do with composition.
@ omnilord - lol…
@Soul - Elaborating on JohnVV’s comment… Golden ratio composition - the overview of this software describes it well http://www.phimatrix.com/about-phimatrix/#
In every book and article I’ve read about composition, there is always a rule to put human figure in it so that it gives sense of scale.
Is there any other trick to give the sense of scale without putting the human figure in the scene.
One of the main things to remember, is " lines ". they have to do with how the eye moves around the image. Also, a compositional error that I see quite often, is converging edges. Like you have a picture, say, of a mug, and a pack of cards. you don’t want their edges to occur in the exact same visual space, or happen along the edge of the image. For other compositional pitfalls, study some bathroom mirror selfies. ha!
composition is a an arrangement, construct of relations between motives, elements…
it helps emphasizing and understanding the act/story represented in artworks
rules are based on math/trigonometry/arithmetic
there are more then those few mentioned above (ie 1:2, 3:4, phy, pi…)
It is a base of any art form (music, literature, dance, architecture, illustration… conscious or not)
one of the oldest visual examples is the Eye of Horus
@Modron
Tangents can also help if one knows how to use them (to focus viewer’s attention, to form relations…).
Quick clarification: are you asking about composition (how things are arranged in view) or compositing (mixing multiple images)?
composition (how things are arranged in view)
It’s in the title of the thread.
@burnin , to what are those numbers of horus eye refer to?
Right on. Just making sure. It seems that one or two of the responses here were a little confused about the difference.
In Blender, under camera tab -> compositition guides, there is Harmonious triangle B.
How to use this and what is the logic of the lines ?
Yes, tangents and vectors are very important!
This guy has some interesting observations about tangents
My tip about composition: learn framing/blocking with a real camera. Just try to film a short sequence multiple times and be very observant on how the result look with a specific framing.
First learn the rules of composing, get the theory in your head. You need to know the rules (like color theory), but you don’t need to use it consciously, you fill you subconscious with knowledge and when you need it you just know whats right and what is not.
Let your instinct lead you to the image compositing you feel is right for that moment.
Take a look at good directors and try to find out what they use and why. (and than steal it and make it your own)
Somebody like Kurosawa is a goldmine for inspiration.
surprised no one has linked this yet.
