Computer problem

My best computer stopped working. It will boot up, up to the windows boot screen with the blue bars. Then after a moment, right when it should boot up it freezes (blue bars stop moving.) I’m not asking for any heavy tech support here, just wanted to ask, anyone have any ideas how I should go about trying to fix this? Other problems I have fixed mostly by myself, but I cant even boot up, so it’s kind of different. Thanks

Try opening it in safe mode and do a virus scan (I doubt it’s a virus but you never know). I had a similar problem once but it fixed itself after a few days. Good luck.

Try using the system restore tool to restore the system to a previous state when it did work.

  1. Click on Start
  2. Click on Control Panel
    3. Click on Performance and Maintenance
    4. On the left side you will see a tab that says “See Also”. Under that you’ll see System Restore

Follow the instructions to return your computer to a previous state.

Hope this helps = )

Obviously this can only be done if you can manage to boot into Safe Mode.
If you can’t boot into Safe Mode, then try and boot off the WinXP CD and do an install repair.

Thanks all, windows actually booted up (normal not safe mode.) That’s strange because a week ago it wouldn’t. Anyway I ran a virus scan and removed several viruses, so I shouldn’t have this problem anymore.

it is for things like this that I always have linux/windows dualboot.

what comp it it? i have a hp box and this happened a couple of times after I got it, turned out the solution was to unplug it from the wall for five minutes, then it worked right after. (i found this out after I reformatted twice grr

I have had the same problem on very rare occasions. It turned out that my computer has sat so long and collected dust and clogged the CPU fan, and to top it off, I had to make sure that all of my internal connections were tight, such as the memory chips and cables. (then again, unplugging the PC probably fixed that too).

I had a similar problem occur when I defragged and did a system scan (SCANDISK). It may have been a bad spot on the hard drive.

Funny you mention that, I do have a linux dualboot. Last time I tried to boot up linux it wouldn’t boot up though. I never use it anyway, so I need to uninstall it (anyone have experience doing this?)

It’s a home made comp, and even worse its a home made case. I’ve never had real problems with the connections, but I do check them when I have a problem like this. It’s REALLY cramped for space inside, I made it so the width of the inside is just enough to fit the motherboard in.
