Concerning pivot/rotation

Hi there

Ok, so I’m futzing around with some .lwo and .3ds models imported into Blender, and a few come out with pieces in weird places. No worries say I, I’ll just rotate them into place. But! My cursor, or the 3 axis pointer (what’s it called?), is waaaay off the screen! How can I move it onto the object in question? Or better still, how can I get a part to rotate at a point of my choosing?

Hoping to short my Tylenol stock before the weekend,

or the 3 axis pointer (what’s it called?),

The Widget or Transform Tool. Hitting period, comma or either of those in combo with Shft and Ctrl will change the Pivot Point (see button in 3D window header) the widget snaps to.

This is why I love this forum. Thank you!

If you want to use the 3d cursor for something, SHIFT-C will put it at the origin (And then zoom your view to show everything, so I usually end up hitting C afterward to just show the cursor area), and SHIFT-S has some options for moving it (to the selection or to the nearest grid point.)
