Connecting loose parts in UV window

Im trying to map my first model in Blender and I keep getting these highlighted loose parts (they are vertical where the rest of the faces are fairly horizontal). I have tried removing sharps, but that doesn’t help. I’ve also tried to weld and stitch these areas as well with no luck. It seems that these areas are getting cut due to sharp angles because they are all selected at the time of unwrapping. Is there a way to connect them, or better yet, keep them from getting separated when unwrapping? Project from view is the method Im using as it gives the best results for my situation.
