It was heavily inspired by this picture which I found somewhere on Pinterest. It took a few versions before it got to this state and every test render that I made throughout the process can be viewed here. Would have loved to put more time into details and scatter a few more things around the scene to sell the idea of it being an actual base, but since I’ve worked on this project for quite a bit now I thought that it might be time to let go and move on to another project.
I took a very similar approach to stuff that Ian Hubert has been doing in his videos: Projecting an image texture on to a simple mesh and try to sell the illusion that way - which turned out quite well if you ask me! The fact that there are so many objects (and they are pretty far away from the camera) helps as well.
