Contest submission that flew under the radar. Looking for some critique

Hey Guys,

I created this space ship and scene for reddit’s monthly blender contest with the theme of “vehicles”. I submitted the scene and was really hoping for some critique but I didn’t get any replies - so I figured i’d try here.

I’ve been learning blender for just under 5 months now and created this scene over the course of about two weeks. I tried to focus on hard surface modeling and texturing this time around, as well as learning a bit more about overall composition.

I"m not sure how I feel about the angle of the ship that I took - I think a lot of details are lost based on the view. The background might also be a bit too busy, and the glass on the ship specifically has something weird about it - but i’m not sure.

This was modeled and rendered completely within blender, texturing was done in substance painter.

Background comes from the European Southern Observatory, and the planet render comes from a tutorial on youtube by Joseph Farah. (Can’t post links because this is a new account).

Let me know what you like about it and what you don’t. Any comment’s or critiques as welcome. I’ll add a few more renders below for review as well.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Of the images you posted I prefer the first one. I’m slightly unsure what you are really asking for. I like the ship design, but it seems quite low poly. I’m unsure if the boltsize is the expected one compared to the ship (but I don’t have much for measuring it’s scale). As for creating an interesting image I don’t think your images tell as much of a story as for example this one does: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=358&t=1299518 (which I also think makes nice use of warm/cold color contrast).

How was it built? It seems there are very large pieces of metal? It does not have the panel detail of images like: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/JD84Z (But yes, they seem to be of different sizes.) Take a look at how really good helicopter modellers make their models. It seems to me you are using bump maps for some things that could better have been modelled.
