In this tutorial: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=102022&rl=1 it says how to create “control icons” in maya, I can’t find a way to do this in blender. Could anyone help me out?
It’s not quite the same but Blender uses Custom Bone Shapes which actually replaces the bone rather than make the bone child of. Just enter the Object name of a Mesh object in Armature Bones tab and turn on Draw Shapes in Display Options tab…

if you use mesh curves or circles you will need to put your skeleton in wireframe mode. i did not find a way to display mesh curves in solid mode.
