Controlling skeleton branch with curves and skeleton path deform ?

Hi I was wondering how Blender achieve things like, spine rigs controlled with curves and a skeleton branch following a path while deformed by the path?

The doc answers 1 of my questions but not the second one. I would like to know if it is possible to have a skeleton branch following a path or curve while it is deformed or affected by the curve. I like the hooks and ik conts it is like maya cluster solution and it seems like it is integrated into the interface well. . But I am curious to know if it is possible to swim skeleton over a curve.
