Converting a path to a mesh

I used to be pretty good at Blender but haven’t used it in a few years and am trying to get back into it. I cannot remember how to use a path and then make it a mesh. I prefer using 2.49b, the new versions have changed so much.

I am trying to make a handle for a bucket and I am assuming a path is the best way to go about it unless you have a better suggestion. It needs to look like a wire handle like a metal bucket has. Thanks

Select the Path in object mode and then press Alt+C, there will then be an option to convert it to a mesh

Ah yes I remember that now, however it didn’t change anything. Still reminds a path

As Jamie said, Alt C in object mode, make sure to click one of the options presented. Expand the path in the Outliner. If a curve / path you’ll see a curved line icon, if a mesh it will display a triangle icon.

Look at bevel curves to create the wire handle.

Got it, didn’t have to convert to mesh, in the options was Bevel Depth and that did it. When it was converted to Mesh there wasn’t a “Bevel Curves” option. thanks

Having an issue making the bucket smooth. 4 levels of subserf helps but it isn’t correct. I want this to be a usable piece in an animation or perhaps a future game. I believe the triangles should be quads but that doesn’t help. Smooth helps a little but still not correct. A bucket should be smooth. Any ideas?

Before converting the path to a mesh, ensure that the curve is smooth enough for your desired result  Maybe subdivide your path, then convert to a mesh.

Also, be sure to check that your curve resolution settings are how you want them before converting too.

To be honest, for something like this i would model the handle using a circle (Delete half the verts to create a semi circle) then subdivide and convert it to a curve. Then i would use the curve bevel settings to solidify the curve and then convert the result back to a mesh

Its a little of an over complication of a simple task, but thats how ive always done it

Thanks Jamie. Would that be the way for it to be low poly low verts and not have any triangles? I’ll give it a shot.

it should be  and it will be 100 % quads.

Just make sure your bevel resolution is not too high before you convert it to a mesh if you are trying to keep it low poly. 1 or 2 should do it.

The preview and render resolutions seem to have no effect on a converted curve, so thats why its best to have a smooth enough curved mesh before converting.

Having an issue with converting curve to mesh, I tried clicking both options and neither change it when I use a half circle. I can convert a path to mesh, but not working this way. Any ideas? Thanks

2.49b ? Alt C in latest versions give different options to what you’ve shown. Update?

I prefer 2.49b because it’s what I know best, I can’t even do the most simple tasks in the newer versions.

Try using half of a bezier circle instead maybe? no idea why Alt+C isn’t doing anything for you? it should work
