Corrupt avi file, too large or bug?

I’m rendering large avi files (2.56 Gig, raw) that won’t play because they appear to have a missing index (according to virtual dub). I’m using windows XP NTFS and 2.41 Blender, so it’s not an OS limit on file size.

Anyone else have this problem?

Try rendering to QuickTime format. It’s just a better format all the way around.

AVI limit is 2G byte.

The OpenDML extension for AVI files >2GB:

What, MOV? RAW AVI is better (actually it is the best quality that you can get). Sure they are huge files, but they are non-compressed (no codecs) and can be edited without loss of quality.

Are you using RAW AVI or are you usinng a codec, like DIVX?

I use avi instead of image sequences to avoid the extra steps. I use the raw format as you suggest since it’s higher quality and easier to control the compression post render.

Instead of using VirtualDub, try using another software package, like Ulead MediaStudio Pro, or Adobe Premiere.

In your opinion, which is better? I would assume Adobe…

I prefer Ulead. It has ‘real time’ editing and a LOT easier to use and learn. To me, Adobe Premiere is too clumsy and hard to work with.

In Ulead, you can select small chunks of the project to “preview” and see the results quickly.

Ulead has a load of built-in tools:

  • Filters as seen in PaintShop to correct color
  • Chroma Key
  • Alpha channel
  • Overlays
  • Special FX
  • Transitions from different scenes
  • Slow motion and reverse
  • Multiple tracks
  • Titles
  • Animations features
  • Video Paint (per frame)
  • And a crap load more!

If you choose the animation setting in quicktime you’ll get full, uncompressed frames. I’ve never had any problem porting this type of video into any program, although Ive never used Virtual Dub.

I’ve used virtual dub. I tried Ulead MediaStudio. I need a program like VirtualDub that retains the high res of the file, yet lets me add text to the avi. All programs like MediaStudio change the resolution to a lower res.

Too bad Blender has the text errors. That is something that has to be fixed quick, for me that is.

EDIT________________

Yeah, I found some higher res options in the U-Lead package, seems to be good enough
