Corrupt png? Way to fix it?

I’ve been texture painting yesterday and all was fine until Blender crashed and one of the paint layer pngs was corrupted (or so I think)

It somehow lost its transparency in painted areas. Is there a way to fix this? I’ll probably just paint this part of the texture anew but it is still really weird.
The file was 16bit alll of a sudden and in photoshop it is displayed correctly.

Already tried bringing it down to 8bit again and saving in different formats but nothing helped :frowning:

Make sure this is enabled in the uv/image editor :

If it does not fix, upload your png so someone can take a closer look

the png file for those interested. Try opening it in PS and some other image viewer and it should look different. If not let me know

it was already enabled in the uv editor. Turning it off was even more interesting however as it lead to the following result

Looks like alpha is 1bit. Which can’t be true because when turned on there are some things that are fading towards the edges…

Nothing wrong with the image if you select the correct colour channels to view (colour and alpha) not just colour

yeah i had it enabled i just wanted to show that it looked rather odd. Try opening it in Photoshop or compare your result with the screenshot from the first post. The png is clearly missing some alpha information. Interestingly not everywhere

I can see nothing wrong with the png file or its transparency in blender or PS so what needs to be ‘fixed’

I see nothing wrong with the image also…

look at the screenshot from the first post. clearly the photoshop side looks different.
Especially on the dark parts on the left side of the image.

But nvm i just repainted it

Last time I painted transparency on a PNG in Blender, it worked fine until I saved the file and reopened it, and found somehow the alpha channel had vanished and the old alpha areas turned to black on a non-alpha PNG, destroying all the work. I have insufficient expertise to understand why, so I just use Photoshop now, which does what I expect it to. To be honest, I find the whole image editing interface pretty much baffling.

I opened the PNG in Gimp and you can see difference in how much transparent some part of the images are displayed.
the one in Gimp :

the one in Blender :

I think it has to do with the transparent checkerboard background that is way darker in Blender than in Gimp (or in Photoshop, that is even brighter than the one in Gimp) and may prevent the eyes to see the transparency clearly.

I can’t seem to find a way in the user prefs-> theme to change the brightness of that checkerboard display , so no idea if it’s possible to improve the display there. Better work on your texture in photoshop/other image editor indeed if you need to better and clearer view of your transparency.
